The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, McMaster University, in conjunction with Hamilton Health Sciences, is seeking a full-time academic Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to provide care at McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH).
Department and Program Overview:
The successful candidate will join the current McMaster complement of inpatient child and adolescent psychiatrists, pediatric psychologists, and allied health professionals. The Child and Youth Mental Health Program, Acute Mental Health Services, at McMaster Children’s Hospital, includes a 22-bed inpatient unit, a 6-bed Mental Health Assessment Unit and emergency mental health service, and a Consult-Liaison Service. There is collaboration with our ambulatory services at the Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre, which includes our outpatient services, brief intervention program, and day hospital program. Our academic division has strong educational and research initiatives, allowing collaborations between researchers, educators, clinicians, community-based service providers and knowledge leaders.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences is a multidisciplinary department consisting of MD and non-MD faculty working within a unique regional network of psychiatric services that integrates two hospitals. We have excellent opportunities available for psychiatrists interested in an academic career in the following areas: inpatient mental health, consultation-liaison, emergency psychiatry, and substance abuse.

Hamilton is geographically situated between Toronto and Niagara, less than an hour’s drive from each destination. Qualifications:
-The successful candidate will hold an MD and will have advanced training and experience in child psychiatry beyond residency, with preference given to candidates with 2-5 years practice experience.
-The candidate will have demonstrated commitment and skills in clinical education with all levels of learners and will provide leadership and training to future Child Psychiatrists. There are ample education and supervision opportunities with the General Psychiatry training program, the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Subspecialty Program, the Psychology postdoctoral program, residents from other departments, medical and physician assistant students.
-Particular interest and expertise in inpatient mental health and emergency psychiatry is an asset.
-Experience with evidence-based assessment instruments and rating scales is needed and a commitment to multidisciplinary clinical assessment and evidence-based treatment models is essential. The candidate will work as part of an inter-professional inpatient mental health team with a focus on treatment of complex, co-morbid, and severe mental illness in children and youth.
-Demonstrated capability and interest in clinical research and evidence of a history of research productivity to align with the departmental academic mission and vision is an asset. The academic child psychiatrists will be expected to fully participate in all of the appropriate departmental and divisional administrative and educational activities.
-Applicants must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario and hold Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons specialty certification in psychiatry or an equivalent designation. The appointee will hold a full-time academic appointment in Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at an academic rank appropriate to their credentials and experience. The position offer excellent benefits and remuneration is commensurate with academic rank and position duties and responsibilities.
