Job Description
Located in beautiful southwest Ontario, our client, Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN, pronounced wren) represents the 2025 merger of St. Mary’s General Hospital and Grand River Hospital into a single, integrated health-care organization. Building on over 90 years of partnership, WRHN brings the strengths of both Hospitals together and is home to seven regional programs and comprehensive health care services to meet the current and emerging needs in Waterloo-Wellington and beyond.
Operating from three hospital sites with a combined total of 877 beds, the hospitals have approximately 140,000 ER visits annually. WRHN’s regional programs include their: Regional Cardiac Care Centre and a Centre of Excellence for Respiratory and Thoracic Care; a Regional Cancer Centre; a Hepatobiliary Surgical Program; and their Regional Stroke, Renal and Mental Health Programs. In addition, a new hospital is being planned at the David Johnston Research + Technology Park at the University of Waterloo.
Waterloo Regional Health Network @ Queen’s Blvd (formerly St. Mary’s General Hospital) is home to the Regional Cardiac Care Centre (RCCC) for Waterloo-Wellington. In addition, the Centre accepts referrals from Perth County, Grey-Bruce, Huron, Brant, and Oxford Counties, as well as Haldimand-Norfolk.
The WRHN RCCC is a full-service, adult non-transplant cardiac surgery centre serving a population of almost 1.4 million. The Division of Cardiac Surgery performs over 750 open heart procedures annually, including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement, complex aortic surgery, MICS, and Ross procedures. Additionally, in collaboration with the Division of Cardiology, the growing TAVI program performs almost 200 cases per year, including transcarotid and transaxillary alternative access.
WRHN is seeking a Cardiac Surgeon to join their highly collegial team to make a total of 3 Cardiac Surgeons to serve the Kitchener-Waterloo area.
Qualified candidates will possess, or be eligible for, FRCSC certification, or equivalent, in Cardiac Surgery. Candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. CPSO pathway licensure is easily available for US Board Certified Surgeons with new regulations implemented in 2023 that have created a straight forward licensure process without the requirement for supervision.
WRHN is offering an attractive turn key surgical practice opportunity with an office provided in the hospital. Compensation is Fee for Service plus HOCC funding. Call is 1 in 3. Relocation and other incentives are negotiable.
Academic appointments are available through their affiliation with the McMaster University Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine providing the opportunity to teach medical students and residents in this position.
Located just one hour west of Toronto, the Kitchener-Waterloo (KW) area provides the perfect blend of modern urban centres combined with spectacular scenic rural landscapes including over two thousand acres of parkland. The Waterloo Region is a world-renowned high-tech cluster, with more than 1,000 technology firms and is one of the fastest growing regions in Ontario. KW is home to two universities, one community college, and the head offices of two of Canada’s largest financial services companies. As the largest central community in one of Canada’s fastest growing regions, Kitchener-Waterloo offers the very best of multicultural, large urban centre living and vibrant city life with the warmth and tight-knit community associated with smaller towns.
A Position Profile is available to interested candidates.
