ACADEMIC POSITION – Clinician Scientist

INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY

 

The Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, at Western University and London Health Sciences Centre, and St. Joseph’s Health Care Centre are seeking a physician for full-time clinical academic appointment to Western University. Applicants should be certified, or eligible for certification, in Cardiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent. Candidates must have an MD, or equivalent, and must be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) in the province of Ontario.

 

The Division of Cardiology at Western is well-recognized and respected both nationally and internationally. The

Division’s more than 30 physicians provide secondary, tertiary, and quaternary cardiovascular services for the City of London, Southwestern Ontario and beyond. The Division has the largest Royal College Subspecialty Training Program in the Department of Medicine. Research expertise within the Division is extensive. 

 

The Division of Cardiology is seeking an academic cardiologist whose clinical focus is Interventional Cardiology with specific expertise in coronary artery interventions. The successful candidate must have completed fellowship training in Interventional Cardiology and be proficient in percutaneous coronary interventions. They must have a strong interest in fostering a more collaborative and programmatic approach to coronary interventions and working harmoniously with other cardiovascular division members.

 

Applicants for this Clinician Scientist academic position must have a very strong committed clinical research focus. They must have experience and a track record of leading and conducting clinical research and innovation. The applicant must have demonstrated research productivity with the following (1) a minimum of 100 peer-reviewed publications; of which, at least 20 are first or senior authorship; (2) successfully secured at least one peer-reviewed regional or national research grant of at least $200,000 (Canadian); (3) demonstrated ability to collaborate with peers (as attested by references) 4) Demonstrated national-level leadership and influence on clinical practice, as evidenced by serving on expert data, research, or guideline-writing committees for national specialty societies.5) Evidence of commitment to leadership development, including the successful completion of a formal, peer-reviewed national leadership program

 

It is essential that the applicant possess a strong ability to collaborate with colleagues and have the ability to successfully design and model prospective trials, supported by formal, peer-reviewed training in data-enabled trial design, and a proven track record of leading and executing complex, high-impact retrospective clinical studies that will enhance research productivity in the Division. Applicants must possess advanced methodological skills in applied biostatistics, health data science and training in clinical trials, and be committed to leading a cardiovascular clinical trials program. They would also serve as a resource for researchers in cardiovascular sciences. They would be expected to foster an environment that encourages others working in the cardiovascular sciences field, such as heart failure, cardiac electrophysiology, cardiovascular surgery, cardiac imaging, data science and artificial intelligence, among others, to bring forth clinical research ideas that have the potential to be developed into clinical research studies. Applicants are also expected to possess a proven track record of teaching and mentoring, including successfully supervising graduate trainees (e.g., MD, PhD) to completion. They will have a limited role in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to supervise graduate trainees. Rank, term of appointment and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Financial renumeration will comprise of fee for service, alternative funding plan and academic salary.

 

The successful candidate will hold a limited term academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, or a continuing academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor depending on qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will join a busy academic practice of eight other academic Interventional Cardiologists working within a teaching hospital environment that includes coronary and structural interventional cardiology fellows. Primary clinical duties will involve management of cardiology patients in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, ambulatory Cardiac Clinic and assigned weeks of general cardiology in-patient clinical teaching unit coverage and coronary care unit.
