Job Description

Company Description

Nova Scotia Health is the largest provider of health services in Nova Scotia, with some specialized services also offered to clients throughout Atlantic Canada. We’re on a mission to achieve excellence in health, healing, and learning through working together, which is reflected in the hospitals, health centers, and community-based programs we operate across the province.

Our passionate team of professionals provides a variety of high-quality inpatient and outpatient services including academic, tertiary, and quaternary care, as well as continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions. Join a diverse team of innovators, collaborators, and creative thinkers today.

Job Description

Digby General Hospital is actively seeking locum physicians to provide coverage in their Emergency Department during a period of active recruitment.

Digby General Hospital (DGH), historically founded in 1924, provides medical care to residents of the surrounding areas including primary, inpatient, restorative, and ambulatory care as well as day surgery. Located in Digby, the 20-bed medical and alternate level of care (ALC) unit works closely with the collaborative emergency center (CEC) in Annapolis Royal and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. DGH also has a 13-bed restorative care unit that supports patients through rehabilitation.

  • Schedule: The Emergency Department operates on a two-shift schedule, with 12-hour shifts and single-provider coverage.
  • Support: The team fosters a collaborative and supportive environment. Locum physicians will be well-supported by a team that truly embodies teamwork and is always available for guidance.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work with a dedicated and welcoming group of professionals while making a meaningful contribution to the community.

Responsibilities

  • examine patients, order diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures
  • advise patients on health care, health promotion, and disease prevention
  • consult and refer to other medical practitioners
  • act as a patient advocate
  • prescribe and administer medications and treatments, inoculations and vaccinations

Compensation is provided by the service, and locum physicians are eligible to access the travel elements of the program, including reimbursement for kilometrage, per diems, accommodations (up to $300 per night), and airfare (up to $1,500), along with travel time up to 10 hours per week. Licensing fees for CPSNS are covered, and locum physicians may claim Facility On Call fees under specific conditions.

Digby’s downtown boasts historic architecture, boutique shops and restaurants serving freshly caught seafood.

Practicing in Nova Scotia

Physicians in Nova Scotia provide fulfilling patient care which embraces family life, professional development and community involvement. That's what makes practicing medicine in Nova Scotia unique. Physicians are increasingly attracted to practices that offer team-based care to their patients and allow them to consult with their peers. The size and scale of Nova Scotia allows for better connections across the health care system. Your practice of medicine and your life is richer here. Nova Scotia is more than medicine.

We are dedicated to equity, diversity, inclusion, and truth and reconciliation, and we are working to support medical communities that are reflective of and responsive to the diverse populations they serve in Nova Scotia. We welcome physicians from diverse backgrounds and experiences to join us in building healthier, more equitable communities across the province.
