About Haldimand War Memorial Hospital (HWMH)

Located in Dunnville, Ontario, the Haldimand War Memorial Hospital (HWMH) serves a catchment population of 20,000 with seasonal increases during summer months.

Located approximately 45 mins from St. Catharines and less than an hour south of both the City of Hamilton and Niagara Falls, HWMH has 22 Acute Care Beds that are managed by family physicians, 13 Complex care beds and 2 Respite Care Beds. Surgical services include General Surgery, Endoscopy, minor Urology and Cataract surgery. The HWMH Diagnostic Imaging department supports the community through the provision of the following services: General x-ray, Computed Tomography (CT/CAT Scan), Ultrasound, Mammography / Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP), Bone Density, Holter Monitors and Electrocardiogram (ECG), and the hospital is proud to be the only provider of Computed Tomography in Haldimand County. In addition to the on-site General Surgeon, additional specialties and critical care is available within 45-60 minutes (Hamilton, Niagara).

The hospital is a teaching site for McMaster Medical School and frequently hosts medical students and FM resident rotations. Visiting specialists also hold clinics in the hospital’s newly renovated outpatient clinic space to provide a complete range of care for the community.

About the HWMH ED

The HWMH ED is beautiful newly built (2019) ten stretcher ED with updated facilities and equipment, 24-hour on-site lab and DI, including CT scanner. The site has 20,000-25,000 visits annually, or approximately 50-70 patients per day, with higher volumes during day shifts.

The ED is staffed by family physicians and receives additional support from a Nurse Practitioner on most weekday shifts. Typical shift times are 12 hours (8am-8pm, or 8pm-8am) with split shifts available from 8am-2pm and 2pm-8pm.

HWMH ED is scheduled for 24-hour single coverage which is reimbursed through an Alternative Funding Arrangement (AFA) that provides a lucrative hourly rate and weekend/holiday premiums. The site receives HOCC funding for the ED-backup rotations (family physicians cover the inpatient unit).

About the Opportunity

The emergency department is currently seeking physicians to support their busy rural ED, with capacity for an additional 1.5 – 2 FTEs, with 6-12 open shifts per month. This opportunity offers supervision for physicians who are interested in joining the department.

Requirements

ü CFPC (EM) certification is considered an asset but is not required

ü ACLS, ATLS, PALS and advanced airway skills are essential
