Job Description

ACADEMIC ADULT CRITICAL CARE SPECIALIST - Clinician Educator

Department of Medicine, McMaster University

The Department of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare invite applications for an Academic Adult Critical Care Specialist.

Position

This is a full-time active staff appointment in the Medical-Surgical ICU at St. Joseph's Healthcare as a Clinician Educator.

The role includes approximately 12 weeks of clinical service annually within the academic ICU and associated Critical Care services, during which the individual will lead the inter-professional critical care team as attending physician and participate in the Critical Care Response Team and hospital-wide consultative care. The successful candidate will join a cohesive group of intensivists and provide high-quality care to patients with medical and surgical emergencies.

This position is ideal for an intensivist with a passion for bedside teaching, curriculum development, mentorship, and educational scholarship. Candidates are expected to contribute to the academic mission of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton through teaching and supervision of undergraduate, postgraduate, and fellowship trainees affiliated with McMaster University. The successful candidate would ideally have advanced formal training in education methodology, and a track record of sustained educational leadership. Evidence of scholarly productivity—such as curricular program development, implementation, and evaluation—particularly in the fields of point of care ultrasound and/or simulation based education, will be viewed favourably. The successful candidate is expected to develop an independent or collaborative academic portfolio aligned with the Critical Care Program and must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, thriving within a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary environment involving multiple medical and surgical specialties and consultative services. An interest and/or experience in administration would be seen as an asset.

Applicants must have a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine with certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent training and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario.

The successful candidate will be a full-time member of the Division of Critical Care and will be expected to contribute to the academic mission of the Faculty and Division. The successful candidate will be expected to fully participate in all appropriate departmental and divisional educational activities.

Hospital and Intensive Care Unit Description

As a multi-site, tertiary care, academic and research health care organisation, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) strives to care for patients and families in a spirit of compassion and commits to making a difference in people's lives through innovative health services and internationally recognised programs. As well as having strong general internal medicine, general surgery, critical care, and family medicine programs, SJHH specialty and regional services include respiratory and gastrointestinal medicine; nephrology; renal transplant; mental health; ophthalmology, and thoracic, head and neck, Bariatric and Urological surgery. SJHH is a member of the St. Joseph’s Health System (SJHS) and is affiliated with McMaster University and Mohawk College.

The Critical Care Service is a busy service that cares for patients within a large level 3 Medical-Surgical Intensive Care and level 2 Medical Step‑Down Units, an active Critical Care Response Team, as well as providing consultative services throughout the hospital. The Physician group consists of 18 physicians who provide comprehensive care for all patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and Medical Step‑Down Unit.

Remuneration and Academic Standing

Academic rank, salary, and contractual arrangements will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. For the successful candidate remuneration will be competitive with the usual income range for an academic intensivist in the province of Ontario.
