Job Description

Academic Neurologist

Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine

Queen’s Health Sciences

Position Overview

The Division of Neurology within the Department of Medicine at Queen’s University at Kingston invites applications for the position of Clinical Academic Neurologist. This is a Clinician Scholar role and the successful candidate will play a key role in advancing clinical care and academic/scholarly service in the field of Neurology. Applicants must possess strong general neurology skills, but we also welcome applicants with subspecialty training in headache, neuromuscular, epilepsy, cognitive, stroke, etc. A strong interest in academic general neurology and urgent neurology clinic will be highly prized. This position is to fill an existing vacancy within the University.

The Division of Neurology provides clinical care to a large catchment area in Southeastern Ontario with specialty clinics and has an active subspecialty neurology training program. The successful incumbent will provide clinical service in multidisciplinary clinics in their chosen subspecialty or in urgent neurology clinic, and also general neurology clinics if so desired. There is an expectation for the incumbent to provide in-patient general neurology service coverage, including night and weekend call in conjunction with the Division of Neurology. Interested candidates may also have the opportunity to cover acute stroke should they so desire, though this service is not expected except in the case of stroke fellowship-trained neurologists. The incumbent will be expected to teach medical residents, clinical fellows, and undergraduate medical students in a clinical setting in the field of Neurology as a key part of their role, consistent with the expectations of clinical academic appointments. Protected research time may be considered for an appropriate candidate.

The successful candidate will have major clinical responsibilities and will be expected to demonstrate exemplary clinical service. The successful candidate must also demonstrate strong potential for teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as exhibit a strong potential for innovative scholarly contributions (in research, quality assurance, and/or education). The successful candidate must also demonstrate strong leadership skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a collaborative environment. The incumbent will be expected to make contributions through service to the Department, the Faculty, the University, and/or the broader community.

Qualified applicants will hold an MD degree (or equivalent) and be eligible for licensure in Neurology by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Certification, or eligibility for certification, by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Neurology is preferred. Candidates must demonstrate training and experience in neurology, with additional fellowship training as detailed above is considered an asset.
