Job Description
Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences
Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University
Clinical Academic Position – Pediatric Neurosurgeon
The Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with London Health Sciences Centre, is seeking a full-time Pediatric Neurosurgeon. The successful candidate will hold a clinical academic appointment at Western University as a Clinician Teacher or Clinician Researcher. Appointment rank will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in a limited-term (Clinical Academic) appointment, or at the Associate or Full Professor level in a continuing (Clinical Academic) appointment, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Academic achievement will form a core component of the selection process. Candidates must demonstrate a sustained record of academic activity in either clinical research or medical education, consistent with the Clinician Researcher or Clinician Teacher stream. Academic contributions will be assessed using standard metrics appropriate to each stream, including peer-reviewed publications, grant funding, educational leadership, curriculum development, and teaching effectiveness.
The successful candidate will work effectively within an interdisciplinary clinical and academic environment and will demonstrate strong communication with patients, families, colleagues, staff, and hospital leadership. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education within the Departments of Clinical Neurological Sciences and Surgery.
Applicants must hold an MD (or equivalent), be certified or eligible for certification in Neurosurgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent), be eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario, and be eligible for medical staff appointment and clinical privileges at London Health Sciences Centre. Applicants must have completed a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery and demonstrate a commitment to comprehensive pediatric neurosurgical care.
Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience and will be composed primarily of the following sources: fee for service, alternative funding plan and academic support.
Western University is a research-intensive institution with a strong commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and global engagement. The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is one of Canada’s leading medical schools, with a longstanding tradition of excellence in medical education, clinical scholarship, and scientific discovery. Together, Western and Schulich provide a collaborative academic environment that supports clinical innovation, high-impact research, and the education of future physician leaders.
Western, like many postsecondary institutions in Canada, is moving beyond sole reliance upon Indigenous self-identification in its hiring processes. This is to safeguard against the use of incorrect, incomplete, or misleading information in circumstances in which a candidate has made a declaration of Indigenous citizenship or membership. Candidates who are invited for an interview or who are short-listed, and who have made a declaration of Indigenous citizenship or membership for material advantage at Western, including where required or preferred for the position, will be asked to have their declaration of Indigenous citizenship or membership affirmed through a relational accountability process, led by the Office of Indigenous Initiatives (OII), that is consistent with Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing. Please contact the OII directly for details on the affirmation processes: https://indigenous.uwo.ca/. The policy can be viewed at: POLICY 1.58 - Affirming Declarations of Indigenous Citizenship or Membership at Western University.
