Health PEI is currently seeking Locum Obstetricians/Gynecologists to provide support to its team of specialists beginning immediately for 6 months.
Placement opportunities can be as short as a 1 week or as long as 6 months. The Obstetricians/Gynecologists will work out of a clinic located in Summerside, Prince Edward Island and provide on-call coverage at Prince County Hospital which is operated by Health PEI, a crown corporation is responsible for the delivery of publicly funded health services in Prince Edward Island. Health PEI’s head office is located at 16 Garfield Street, Charlottetown, PEI
The Locum physician will share in the responsibility for the care of approximately one-third of the women in the province of Prince Edward Island, which has a population of more than 150,000 residents. Obstetricians/Gynecologists in the province provide prenatal care and deliveries. The physician will have privileges in the Prince County Hospital, a 110-bed regional hospital with a six-bed ICU that provides specialty services in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesia, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, ENT and Psychiatry. Job duties include:
- Provide referral services for family physicians and nurse practitioners in the province.
- Participation in on-call services with the group of Obstetricians/Gynecologists.

Start Date: Starting Immediately
Hours of Work:
- Regular office access Monday-Friday up to 37.5 hours/week.
- Participation is required for after hours on-call services at Prince County Hospital.
Remuneration:
- Daily rate:
- $2100 for all medical services provided during regular daytime hours, Monday to Friday; or
- $2,800 for each 24-hour period, or;
- Fee for service.
Locum Supports and Reimbursements:
Short Term Locum
- Reimbursement of the MCC-AMR Application Fee and PEI Application Fee
- Reimbursement of the cost of locum license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI.
- Coverage of registration fees with the Medical Society of PEI.
Locums coming from out of province and who are not Island residents are also eligible for the following:
- Coverage of accommodations during the length of the locum stay on Prince Edward Island, up to a maximum of $300 per night with receipt or $200 per night without receipts, following guidelines outlined below.
For reimbursement for accommodations without receipt the following stipulations shall apply:
- Reimbursement is limited to nights directly associated with scheduled workdays; day before, day after and days worked.
- The physician must be in the province to be eligible for reimbursement for accommodation without receipt.
- $100 per day stipend will be provided for the days worked during the locum period.
- Paid actual travel time ($50/hour) from home province to Prince Edward Island and return will be covered.
- Cost of one return travel to Prince Edward Island based on an economy airfare to a maximum of $2,000. If traveling by car, mileage will be reimbursed as determined by PEI Treasury Board Policy and bridge and road tolls reimbursed with submission of receipts. Reimbursement for travel by car is not to exceed the cost of economy airfare.
- Coverage of car rental up to $1400 per week with receipt, associated with days worked.
Long Term Locum (Working at least 10 days a month for no less than 6 months with a defined start and end date)
- Reimbursement of the MCC-AMR Application Fee and PEI Application Fee costs with Physicians Apply;
- Reimbursement of cost of license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI.
- Coverage of dues with Medical Society of PEI.
Locums coming from out of province and who are not Island residents are also eligible for the following:
- Accommodations:
- 10 + days coverage per month – up to $5000 per month with receipts or $3000 per month without receipts.
- $50 per day stipend will be provided for the days worked during the locum period.
- Paid actual travel time ($50/hour) from home province to Prince Edward Island and return will be covered.
- Cost of one return travel to Prince Edward Island based on an economy airfare to a maximum of $2,000 with receipts. If traveling by car, mileage will be reimbursed as determined by PEI Treasury Board Policy and bridge and road tolls reimbursed with submission of receipts. Reimbursement for travel by car is not to exceed the cost of economy airfare.
- Coverage of car rental up to $1400 per week with receipts.
Certifications and Eligibility Requirements:
- FRCPC or eligibility for Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification;
- Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island; and
- Appointment to the Health PEI Medical Staff and appropriate privileging.
Atlantic Registry
Starting May 1, 2023, physicians whose primary practice is in Atlantic Canada (and hold a general registration in either PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador) may be eligible to obtain registration to practice in all four Atlantic Canadian provinces via the Atlantic Registry. Health Care Workers are required to provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination as per Health PEI’s Covid-19 Immunization and Management Policy.
