Job Description
Job Summary:
Health Shared Services (HSS) invites applications for the role of Medical Consultant, Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Standards and Innovation.
The Practitioner provides consultative occupational medicine services for the WHS portfolio.
The Practitioner shall act as a resource for the WHS portfolio in developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating the occupational health components of HSS WHS policy and programming. The Practitioner will liaise with physicians internal and external in matters pertaining to occupational health, safety and wellness as they may affect our workforce
Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
Workplace Health and Safety Services:
Provide expert opinion regarding employee fitness to work (e.g. pre-placement, return to work)
Communicate with treating physicians in situations where there is uncertain or conflicting medical information
Assist in the development of medical guidelines and directives, as needed, within the overall scope of organizational policy and protocols (e.g. immunizations, blood and body fluid exposure follow-up, outbreak management)
Authorize diagnostic testing when required (e.g. post-exposure serological testing, medical surveillance programs)
Authorize prescriptions when required (e.g. post-exposure prophylaxis following communicable disease exposure)
Review occupational hygiene monitoring results and recommend follow-up actions when required
Provide expert opinion on medical surveillance and post-exposure response for hazardous exposures (e.g. noise, lead, communicable diseases), including interpretation of surveillance results and required follow-up actions
Review and provide recommendations for the medical aspects of hazardous exposure control programs (e.g. respiratory)
Promptly report identified conditions listed as notifiable diseases in the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Regulation to the WHS Executive Director
Liaise with other physicians (e.g. Infection Prevention and Control, Medical Officer of Health) as necessary regarding specific issues of shared concern (e.g. communicable disease outbreaks)
Assist in communicating occupational health risks to leadership and workers
After hours call back support may be required to support a critical incident or other communicable disease situations
Ability Management Services:
Review medical documentation, letters and reports from external physicians and/or specialists
Assist with clarifying uncertain or conflicting medical documentation/information
Recommend next steps for complex workplace accommodations/returns to work
Provide Ability Advisors with written opinions/recommendations on reviewed case files, when requested
Participate in the appeals process related to reviewed employee files, as necessary
Wellness Programs and Services:
Provide support to and promote wellness strategy, programs and services
Additional Services:
Participate in select committees and task forces as the WHS Medical representative, as required and agreed upon with the WHS Executive Director
Provide additional occupational medicine support to WHS services, in addition to what is listed above, as required and agreed upon with the WHS Executive Director
Candidates must be certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) and hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and appointment to the AHS Medical Staff.
Remuneration: In accordance with CMO Policy 01-01.
