Position Description:

Public Health New Brunswick in conjunction with Vitalité Health Network is looking for a candidate for the position of New Brunswick Public Health Laboratory Medical Director. This position offers the unique opportunity to be part of a newly designated provincial public health lab for which construction of a new lab space is already underway. The candidate will be influential in shaping the direction of the new laboratory.

This rewarding position will be located in Moncton, New Brunswick. The Province of New Brunswick, the only officially bilingual province in Canada, offers beautiful scenery, outdoor sports, vibrant cities and welcoming people.

The New Brunswick Public Health Laboratory is located at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre (UHC), in Moncton NB. The laboratory provides public health testing for more than 800,000 New Brunswickers and supports Public Health New Brunswick in its initiatives to protect the population. The Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont UHC is a provincial referral centre due to its highly specialized services, as well as a teaching and research centre.

The candidate will join the dynamic team of Public Health New Brunswick staff, Public Health Laboratory professionals, medical microbiologists and infectious disease consultants from all regions of New Brunswick. The successful candidate will also work collaboratively with members of the Regional Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Department of Vitalité Health Network and Horizon Health Network.

Job Duties:

This position combines leadership in the delivery of public health laboratory diagnostics for the Province of New Brunswick and the provision of patient care with the potential for academic activities and research.

As Medical Director of the New Brunswick Public Health Laboratory, the successful candidate will exercise a strategic leadership role and provide expertise in all areas of microbiology to Public Health committees, the Ministry of Health and the Regional Health Authorities. The candidate will participate in the development of the overall vision and strategic orientation of the Public Health Laboratory, based on organizational priorities, in particular, regarding infectious disease diagnosis and micro-organism characterization, referral services and specialized tests, quality assurance and continuous improvement, surveillance of infectious diseases, investigation of outbreaks, emergency preparedness and response to threats of microbial origin, and research and development of new tests.

The primary role of this position is that of Medical Director of the Public Health Laboratory. Depending on public health priorities and as time allows, the expectation is that the successful candidate will also play a secondary role as a consultant to prevent, diagnose and treat infectious diseases within Vitalité Health Network. There will also be opportunities to contribute to scientific research, publish in specialized journals and present at conferences.

This position will report to the Senior Vice-President of Client Programs and Medical Affairs of Vitalité Health Network and will have a key role in the governance of the Public Health Laboratory as well as close collaboration with the Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health. The New Brunswick Public Health Laboratory is an important component of the modernization of New Brunswick Laboratory Services.

Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in medical microbiology;
  • Eligible for licensure in New Brunswick;
  • Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick;
  • Member in good standing of the New Brunswick Medical Society;
  • Active member of the Canadian Medical Protective Association or equivalent liability insurance association;
  • Member in good standing of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada;
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a medical microbiologist;
  • Training or experience in public health epidemiology or related discipline;
  • Experience in management of a clinical microbiology laboratory and/or public health laboratory;
  • Working knowledge of budgeting, financial and management processes related to clinical administration;
  • Exceptional leadership, organizational, interpersonal and public speaking skills;
  • Evidence of innovative, creative and critical thinking;
  • Ability to manage and lead in a complex environment;
  • Ability to analyze complex issues, develop and implement plans to resolve issues using problem-solving skills, build consensus and show leadership skills;
  • Exceptional communication skills with people at all levels of the organization as well as the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Physical ability to perform assigned work;
  • Good work history (performance and attendance);
