Clinical Academic Position, Paediatric Neurology

Appointment Type and Rank: The successful candidate will hold a Full-time Limited Term academic appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, or a Full-time continuing appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor depending on qualifications and experience.

Position Profile: 

The Department of Paediatrics, Children’s Hospital, London Health Science Centre, and Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University is seeking a Paediatric Neurology Physician to join our established Division of Paediatric Neurology as a full-time faculty member.


Academic and/or Clinical Expectations:

We invite applications from outstanding clinicians, researchers or educators with a strong record of current or past multi-disciplinary collaboration. The successful candidate will provide additional clinical and scholarly activities in the Division of Paediatric Neurology at the Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), and will help develop academic activities and clinical and educational initiatives within the division and in support of the Department of Paediatrics, and the Division of Paediatric Neurology. The successful candidate will actively contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate education and research programs of the Division, and will also serve as a role model for our undergraduate medical students, paediatric residents and Paediatric Neurology Subspecialty Fellow/Residents. The successful candidate will be appointed as a Scientist or Associate Scientist at the Children’s Health Research Institute. 


Qualifications or Experience and Skills Required:

Candidates must hold an MD or equivalent and be eligible for licensing in the Province of Ontario.  Subspecialty certification in Paediatric Neurology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent is required. The preferred candidate will be a paediatric neurologist who has specialized in paediatric epilepsy and has vast experience with all the continuum scalp EEG interpretation (paediatric and neonatal), PCCU, intracranial SEEG and cortical stimulation recordings and procedures during the phase II of epilepsy surgery, additionally assets will be given to those candidates who have experience and proficiency in neurostimulation techniques (VNS and DBS) for epilepsy, ketogenic diet and epilepsy and genetics. The candidate have demonstrated a commitment to quality improvement with a focus on Epilepsy. Demonstrated interest in optimizing long term outcomes will also be considered an asset.


Compensation Details:

Compensation for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be primarily composed of the following sources: Alternate Funding Plan (AFP) and academic salary.

Department:

The Department of Paediatrics provides comprehensive acute care, ambulatory and in-patient services for children to a population of 2 million in southwestern and northwestern Ontario. Children with a full range of care issues are managed in our Paediatric Emergency Department, Paediatric Critical Care Unit, High Dependency/Transition unit, Neonatology Unit and in-patient Clinical Teaching Units. The Department has a strong research environment and is partnered with the Children’s Health Institute (CHRI Website) with broad programs studying children ranging in age from pre-term neonates to adolescents. The Department is very active in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education. 


Division:

The Paediatric Neurology Division faculty has expanded significant. Currently providing highly advanced care and state of the art care for the most complex neurological conditions. The neurology faculty has developed highly specialized expertise and created comprehensive programs and clinics in the following subspecialty areas: epilepsy, headache, neuromuscular, stroke, neuroinflammation, neurogenetics and rare diseases. The neurology faculty has extensive academic productivity in both medical education and clinical research. Their expertise, has placed them as national and international leaders in their areas of expertise. The neurology faculty works closely in clinical, teaching and research with members of the Department of Paediatrics and the Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences. Collaborative research is also done with scientists at the Children’s Health Research Institute (CHRI). The Division of Neurology is an active consultative child neurology service for outpatients through multiple multidisciplinary clinics and for inpatients of the Children’s Hospital, which is a tertiary center for Southwestern Ontario and serves a population of over 1.8 million.


Within the Division of Paediatric Neurology, the Paediatric Epilepsy Program has expanded significantly, offering advanced care for the most complex epilepsies, including those who are amenable to surgical therapies. The epilepsy program at Children’s Hospital is one of the two designated centres of excellence in epilepsy surgery in Ontario. The epilepsy program includes a multidisciplinary team with vast expertise in paediatric epilepsy and includes a dedicated clinical, neurophysiologist, paediatric epilepsy nurse practitioner, nurse case manager and epilepsy clinic nurse. The paediatric epilepsy fellowship program, has one or 2 epilepsy fellows per year and currently has graduated close to 10 paediatric epileptologist since the program started in 2016.

Children’s Hospital:

Children's Hospital is the only tertiary care center between Toronto and Winnipeg, serving a population of approximately 500,000 children. Children's Hospital has 64 general paediatric beds, 12 Paediatric Critical Care bends, 8 High Dependency/Transition Unit beds, 51 neonatal beds and a very active emergency department. The Department of Paediatrics in London has over 100 faculty members, 40 trainees, and provides a full array of Paediatric sub-specialty services. The Children’s Hospital has a Quality and Safety Committee and has formed partnerships within various international quality improvement initiatives. The department has 2 basic scientists as core members and numerous opportunities exist for clinical, epidemiological, translational, and basic science research.
