Job Description
JOB DESCRIPTION – PART-TIME HYPERBARIC MEDICINE PHYSICIAN
Are you a physician looking to explore an exciting, new area of practice? Looking for a change of pace, or a change of scenery? Want to wind down your practice? Do something out of the box? If yes, then hyperbaric medicine could be the job for you! We are seeking 1-2 PT physicians to add to our current roster.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing 100% pure Medical Grade oxygen while relaxing in a pressurized chamber. Under increased atmospheric pressure, up to 20 times the normal amount of oxygen is dissolved in the blood. The extra oxygen stimulates growth and repair that helps reduce inflammation, promote healing, reduce swelling, and improve the blood supply through angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels from existing blood vessels). Non-healing wounds, delayed radiation injuries (in cancer patients), osteomyelitis and sudden hearing loss are among the many conditions we treat.
When provided by qualified staff, HBOT is extremely safe, non-invasive, and effective. It can enhance the benefits of other therapies (including prescription medications, surgery, physio, etc.) and patients/families often find it far less stressful than other types of treatment. Our patients enjoy their sessions “in the tank” and how great they feel, not to mention how they recover and heal.
Under Pressure is celebrating its 18th year serving patients in the GTA and the province in general. We are one of the leading HBOT clinics in Ontario, providing HBOT for both OHIP-covered and private/3rd party payor patients. Our dedicated team and current roster of physicians would love you to join us.
Physicians with experience and training in emergency medicine, anaesthesia or ICU, or family docs with training in anaesthesia or emergency medicine are preferred but we will consider all physicians who would like to jump at this chance to do something different for their patients and see satisfying results.
Perks
- Working with our amazing staff (we have fun and love our jobs)
- Located just off the shores of Lake Ontario with nearby Mississauga parks and marinas
- Walk or bike to nearby Clarkson GO station; close to beautiful downtown Port Credit in Mississauga
- No overhead! Low stress work environment but really cool and challenging cases
- EMR integrated with ConnectingOntario (Ontario's provincial health database of lab, imaging & hospital patient records)
What you need to do (job responsibilities)
- Perform comprehensive assessments on patients referred to the clinic for HBOT to determine if they are eligible to undergo this therapy in terms of their health condition(s) to be treated and possible contraindications to HBOT.
- Enter consult notes, follow up visit notes and discharge summaries into the clinic EMR; regularly review other patient information (input by hyperbaric oxygen technicians, other physicians and staff and externally sourced data e.g. lab results, imaging results accessible via ConnectingOntario and other data sources, and consider this information and impacts, if any, on ongoing HBOT treatments.
- Monitor patients while they undergo HBOT to ensure all goes well, and if it doesn’t, use your expertise to make it right.
- Work closely with our hyperbaric oxygen technicians (all are certified healthcare providers) to ensure appropriate care and treatment is carried out for each and every patient, including emergency procedures if/when required.
- Keep the patients happy while undergoing treatments - and preferably the staff too!
Qualifications:
- Ensure you have and keep an up-to-date and unrestricted Ontario license through the CPSO.
- Ensure you have applicable and current CMPA malpractice insurance or equivalent.
- Complete a Level 1 HBOT course in Ontario if not already done (costs will be covered by our clinic); make a future commitment to completing a Level 2 or equivalent HBOT course (at own expense).
- Have/maintain BCLS certification
- Bring your prior and current HBOT and/or dive medicine experience with you – if you have it, we’ll take it!
- Commit to ongoing CME (virtual or in person) in hyperbaric medicine.
Compensation:
OHIP FFS for each patient seen daily and all new consults; direct payments for non-OHIP private patient consults
OHIP hyperbaric treatment codes for each patient while undergoing OHIP-approved HBOT treatment
Annual salary varies with # of days/month worked (no weekends; closed on stat holidays) and # of patients undergoing treatment on a given day.
