Job Description

GENERAL OR ANATOMICAL PATHOLOGIST

Permanent Full-Time

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario is located on the St. Mary’s River between Lake Huron and Lake Superior on the U.S. /Canadian border. The Sault has all the amenities of a regional urban centre, with both the Canadian wilderness and extraordinary vacation areas in northern Ontario and Michigan just minutes away.  There is a strong cultural and arts basis in the community, and both winter and summer outdoor activities abound. The Sault has an excellent school system and offers a multitude of sports and artistic opportunities for children and adults alike.  Sault Ste. Marie is served by three Canadian airlines as well as one major U.S. airline.

Sault Area Hospital (SAH) is a state-of-the-art facility opened in 2011. With approval for 291 inpatient beds and 14 Intensivist led ICU beds, SAH provides emergency, primary, secondary, selected tertiary and long-term care healthcare services to the city and the District of Algoma with a catchment population of approximately 115,000.  Programs include the Algoma District Cancer Program, a Regional Renal Program, and a Regional Forensic Pathology Unit.

The Sault Area Hospital Laboratory Medicine Program seeks to recruit a full-time General (AP/CP) or AP Pathologist who values working in a collegial environment with varied and interesting clinical work and close collaboration with clinical colleagues. You will be joining a well-established group of 4 General Pathologists with members holding subspecialty certification in Cytopathology (American Board Certified) and Forensic Pathology (RCPSC Certified). You will be joining a laboratory team of ~75 laboratory staff with three Pathologists’ Assistants supporting the Pathology work. Pathologist duties include on-call and intra-operative consultation coverage, surgical pathology, cytopathology, peripheral blood film review, postmortem examinations, bone marrow collection, and participation in multidisciplinary conferences and quality assurance. Candidates should have skills that complement these group duties. As part of the forensic registry in Ontario, the ability to perform medicolegal autopsies as a Registered Pathologist in Ontario is a strong asset; particularly a candidate with forensic pathology subspecialty also interested in concurrently practicing general/anatomical pathology. Other subspecialty fellowship training will also be considered. On the medical administration and leadership side, there is opportunity for roles within the department and/or hospital. Our laboratory medicine program is also supported by a partnership with a large academic center to which you would have access to in your daily work.

Candidates must possess or be eligible for an unrestricted license to practice medicine in Ontario with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and must hold or be eligible for fellowship in General Pathology or Anatomical Pathology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.  There is flexibility with the starting date.

Affiliation with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) provides the opportunity to teach residents and medical students. There are additional opportunities to provide training and mentoring to medical laboratory students from multiple post-secondary educational institutions.

This position is eligible for the Ontario Ministry of Health incentive offered through the Northern Rural Recruitment & Retention Initiative and the Northern Specialist Alternative Funding Plan.
