Job Description

The Division of General and Thoracic Surgery, within the Department of Surgery, at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and the University of Toronto are inviting applications for up to three permanent full-time faculty positions, for a pediatric surgeon. The effective date of the appointment is flexible, tentatively aiming for 2026.

Additional Description

The successful candidate should possess strong leadership and communication skills. Evidence of excellence in teaching and research is required. The candidate must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. Subspecialty interest is desired. The candidate will participate in the full breadth of pediatric general/thoracic surgery which entails both acute care inpatient and outpatient care. The candidate will take an equal share of call and participate in their share of service coverage including clinic and OR allocations at SickKids and at Humber River Hospital, with all the other staff surgeons. The candidate will participate in the education and training of clinical fellows, residents, and students. Required qualifications include a residency training in pediatric or general surgery. The candidate must qualify for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or hold equivalent international certification, and for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

The Division of General and Thoracic Surgery, within the Department of Surgery at SickKids, is internationally recognized for its contributions to advancing clinical care in academic medicine. This is an exciting time for the Division and the Hospital under the leadership of Dr. Kasper Wang. The successful candidate can anticipate protected time to pursue their academic goals. Applicants must have excellent clinical and surgical care skills for the vast and complex paediatric surgical disorders that present to SickKids. Applicants must also be committed to being fully participating members of high functioning interdisciplinary teams.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to leverage multidisciplinary, clinical, and basic science facilities that are available on the Hospital campus, including the 21-story world renowned Research Institute, and the University of Toronto’s Department of Surgery.

Candidates must be able to function proficiently in English and hold an M.D. or equivalent degree. Demonstrated academic excellence in basic or clinical research is required. Depending on qualifications, candidates will be eligible for appointment as a Surgeon-Scientist, or Surgeon-Investigator.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience, base remuneration will be in the range of $500,000 to $550,000 CAD per year for 35 hours of work per week plus on call responsibilities to which will be added an equal distribution of billing overages. Support for relocation expenses will be offered.

Our Commitment to Diversity

The children and families we care for are diverse, and so are our employees. All are welcome to join our unique organizational culture and be part of our inclusive team.

The University of Toronto and SickKids are strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from racialized person, persons of colour, women, Indigenous/Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disability, LGBTQ persons, and others who may contribute to further diversification of ideas.

SickKids, located at 555 University Avenue in downtown Toronto, is among the largest children’s hospitals in North America and has a long history of excellence in clinical care, research, and education. It was named the number one paediatric hospital in the world in 2025, by Newsweek magazine. SickKids is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and is located adjacent to the University campus and to numerous specialty hospitals and biomedical research institutes. It is an exciting time at SickKids as we execute our campus redevelopment project, including a new state-of-the-art acute care hospital tower.

Toronto is a vibrant and multicultural city and is recognized by the United Nations as the most diverse city in the world, with over half its residents born outside Canada and representation from more than 250 ethnicities. This diversity is reflected in the city’s neighbourhood food scene along with its seventeen Michelin-star restaurants and talents in key sectors like life science, finance, information, and communications technology. It is currently the fourth largest city in North America and boasts a safe, livable, downtown area with excellent housing, schools, and university access. It is consistently ranked as a top travel spot and internationally ranked as one of the world’s most livable cities. World famous lake and wilderness country and year-round outdoor recreation are easily accessible, as are two hub airports for regional or international travel.
