Job Description

Position Summary

Within the context of a patient and family-centered model of care, and in accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic directions of Providence Health Care (“Providence”), the Division of General Internal Medicine is seeking a General Internal Medicine Specialist at Mount St Joseph Hospital (MSJ).

The expectation is for a minimum of 16 weeks of service per year to start in June 2026, though there may be ad-hoc opportunities for temporary or provisional work earlier depending on availability. MSJ is a PHC acute care facility in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Vancouver, with 200 beds and serves a diverse population.

This physician joins a cohesive team of Internists engaged in clinical excellence, quality patient care and teaching. MSJ offers a versatile clinical setting. As a UBC affiliated site it offers opportunities for teaching and mentorship by working alongside students, residents and clinical fellows. It also provides a dynamic clinical practice, offering opportunities for triaging ED consults, ward management and outpatient care. It offers excellent work-life balance, as the ED closes at 2000H. Despite being situated in a large urban center it fosters a collaborative and respectful environment akin to peripheral community sites. The General Internal Medicine role will involve the following:

1. Inpatient ward management, preferably 7 days at a time but there is a large locum pool that will frequently cover weekends
2. ED consultative service which can be performed concurrently with ward management if they so choose
3. Outpatient General Internal Medicine rapid access clinic during the weekdays (no overhead)
4. Overnight call which would consist of seeing patients in the ED as needed until its closure at 2000H. In addition, being available to the ward patients as needed. This call is conducted at home after consults in the ED have been completed.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have completed training in cardiovascular medicine and be certified or be eligible for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. The successful candidate will possess exceptional communication and teaching skills, a demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. Candidates should have a strong track record of being able to work well in teams.
The successful candidate will also exemplify Providence’s values and contribute to a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion. In addition, Providence is committed to our responsibilities on Truth and Reconciliation. We hold ourselves accountable for making our care, facilities and services a safer experience for Indigenous patients, residents, families, staff and Medical Staff.

Why PHC

Providence is a non-profit Catholic organization that provides services in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health and the Provincial Health Services Authority. At Providence we embrace compassionate care, social justice, and innovation while delivering medical services to vulnerable populations across Vancouver and its neighbouring communities. Providence is committed to building a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion where the staff and Medical Staff – both current and prospective – feel welcomed, valued, and supported to thrive in their work. As we look towards the future, we are led by four strategic pillars: quality-forward, people-forward, learning-forward, and partnerships-forward. We invite you to join us as we work towards building the future of healthcare in British Columbia.

How to Apply

To build a strong and representative workforce, we encourage physicians from all backgrounds to apply. We are deeply committed to diversity within our community, and welcome applications from Indigenous persons, people of colour, persons with disabilities, persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity, and others who may contribute to the further diversification and inclusion of ideas, practices, and ways of knowing that can improve our care and services.

Please submit a cover letter, resume, and references in your application.
