Radiation Oncologist

Radiation Oncologist (1.0 FTE)

BC Cancer is committed to reducing the incidence of cancer, reducing the mortality from cancer, and improving the quality of life of those living with cancer. BC Cancer provides a comprehensive cancer control program for the people of British Columbia in partnership with regional health authorities to deliver a full range of cancer services, which include prevention, screening and early detection, diagnosis and treatment, research, education, supportive care, rehabilitation, survivorship and palliative care. It operates six regional cancer centres in Surrey, Kelowna, Vancouver, Victoria, Abbotsford, and Prince George.







BC Cancer – Vancouver Cancer Centre is the largest treatment facility within BC Cancer and works in close collaboration with the BC Cancer Research Centre (BCCRC) and Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), both of which are in close proximity. Our department has a current staff of 40 radiation oncologists, and 15 Clinical Associates. The department has a longstanding reputation for clinical excellence and academia.







The radiotherapy department currently has 9 Varian linear accelerators (including 2 ETHOS and 7 TrueBeam systems), HDR and LDR Brachytherapy suites and 2 CT simulators. The centre has 1 diagnostic MRI scanner (with access for RT simulation appointments) and 2 PET-CT scanners (GE and Siemens Quadra). The regional cancer centre is currently actively constructing and installing a Radixact Tomotherapy with Dynamic Tumour Tracking. There is provincial planning looking into the further expansion of radiation therapy and Molecular Imaging and Therapy which may include MR-Sim, MR-Linac, PET/CT imaging and radiopharmaceutical therapies.







BC Cancer – Vancouver is a full-service cancer centre with strong medical oncology, surgical oncology, diagnostic imaging, pathology, oral oncology, supportive care and functional imaging services and an inpatient unit.







The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work within a provincial Radiation Therapy program, committed to clinical excellence through evidence based standardized care and knowledge generation.



Clinical duties are likely to include 2-3 sites depending on departmental needs and skills of applicants. One clinical position will likely include, Head and Neck, GI, Lung/ thoracic or, GYN malignancies with interest and/or experience in GYN brachytherapy. Experience in SBRT and precision radiation will be an asset. In addition to their clinical duties, the candidate will participate in research, administrative, and educational activities. We have a complement of 11 radiation oncology residents and 1-2 clinical fellows. Faculty appointment and academic rank with UBC Faculty of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Division of Radiation Oncology will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. An appointment with the Provincial Health Service Authority (PHSA) is mandatory and consulting privileges at VGH are expected.







The successful applicant must be eligible for licensure in British Columbia and must have obtained a Fellowship in Radiation Oncology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or hold an equivalent qualification, by the time of appointment.





Successful candidates will also have:

Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).


Core Competencies:

Brings an understanding of the Indigenous specific racism and the broader systemic racism that exists in the colonial health care structure and has demonstrated initiatives in breaking down barriers and ensuring a safe environment ensuring a sense of belonging to all and informed by Indigenous Cultural Safety.
Awareness of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (the Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
