Background Information:

The Department of Psychiatry, situated within BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH), is the only dedicated pediatric tertiary/quaternary care centre for the province of British Columbia serving a population of approximately 4 million people. The BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) affiliated with BCCH, provides support to clinical investigators. UBC is the second-largest university in Canada 60,000 students (undergraduate and postgraduate). The medical school admits 288 undergraduates per year in a distributed program of education and has excellent funding for residency and sub-specialty training.

The Department also provides a consultation service, Compass, to support community providers in provision of evidence informed care. All services are provincial in scope and provide tertiary/quaternary consultation to children, youth and families throughout BC directly on our site, via outreach, or via telehealth services. The Department includes a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canada (RCPSC) accredited subspecialty residency program in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is actively engaged in overseeing the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric core training for general psychiatry residents within the UBC psychiatry program as well as medical students in the UBC Faculty of Medicine. The Department of Psychiatry is affiliated with the BCCHR which has established Brain, Behaviour and Development as one of four major research themes.
