Job Description

Radiation Oncologist - Department of Radiation Oncology

CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB) provides comprehensive oncology services for the province of Manitoba and adjacent areas of Northwestern Ontario and Nunavut. Approximately 4,800 new patients are seen annually by the Radiation Oncology Program.

Position and Term of Employment:

We are seeking a permanent, full time Academic Radiation Oncologist to work within a multi- disciplinary, disease site group model of care.

About the position/location of work:

The Department of Radiation Oncology and CCMB Radiation Oncology Program reside in a state-of-the-art clinical outpatient and cancer research facility in Winnipeg. Outpatient clinical services are delivered at multiple locations in Winnipeg.

Equipment includes 7 Varian linear accelerators, dedicated brachytherapy program, 2 CT simulators and an orthovoltage unit. RapidArcTM and Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy techniques are in use in most sites. A Gamma Knife is located in and managed jointly with the adjacent host hospital, the Health Sciences Centre. PET-CT is available, with a cyclotron onsite.
Six inpatient beds for Radiation Oncology patients requiring admission are located in the host hospital.

The Western Manitoba Cancer Centre, located in Brandon MB, is jointly managed by CCMB and the Prairie Mountain Health Authority. WMCC has one CT simulator and newly replaced True Beam Linear accelerator. Most chemotherapy services are offered here at this location. Three  Radiation Oncologists are located permanently at this site. The successful candidate may be expected to provide coverage at that site in rotation with some other Winnipeg-based staff members as assigned. Depending on the clinical requirements, approximately 0-20% of the successful candidate’s working time may be spent at this facility if required as per need.

Job Duties:

1.    Diagnosis and care of patients with malignant disease and some benign conditions. Order necessary laboratory tests,  imaging, diagnostic tests and procedures.
2.    Becoming integrally involved in the formulation and execution of the management plan of cancer patients through their specific knowledge and skills in the application of cancer management.
3.    Using an evidence-based approach, responsible for the appropriate recommendation, prescription and supervision of therapeutic radiotherapy and other modalities.
4.    Practice in a multidisciplinary fashion, in close collaboration with other medical and surgical specialties as well as other health care team members. Ambulatory patient care is the norm.
5.    Expected to be involved in teaching and research activities and may be assigned some administrative tasks.

The language of work for this position is English.

Remuneration:

The successful candidate will be paid on the basis of appropriate step level based on experience as stipulated in the collective physician remuneration model for Cancer Care Manitoba Radiation Oncologists. On-call is paid through University Medical Group after the on-call services are provided

Additional Information:

Radiation Oncologists hold privileges at Winnipeg teaching hospitals through the Shared Health and are appointed to the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Medicine. Together with the University of Manitoba, CCMB manages a successful Royal College accredited Postgraduate (residency) program for Radiation Oncology. The Radiation Oncology department also has a fellowship program. The Department of Radiation Oncology is committed to excellence in care, and wishes to further develop academic/research strength, working closely with other disciplines. The Paul Albrechtsen Research Institute CancerCare Manitoba is located within CCMB, and provides an excellent opportunity for collaborative research for this Radiation Oncology position.

Qualifications/Skills Requirements:

Candidates must be certified in Radiation Oncology by the Royal College of Physicians of Canada or by the governing body in the country of current practice and must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba and additional 1 to 2-year fellowship in Spine SBRT, Breast, and GU DSG.
