Job Description

Come work as a Medical Coordinator – Site Director with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!

Reporting to the Medical Director for Primary Care at VCH – Vancouver Community, the Medical Coordinator provides clinical leadership for the site Primary Care team in close collaboration with the Primary Care Operations Manager and other members of the clinic leadership team. The Medical Coordinator will work as a dyad partner with the Operations manager in providing this medical and operational leadership.

Please note: this is a Part Time appointment of 0.2 FTE dedicated to leadership and operational oversight.

As a Medical Coordinator – Site Director with Vancouver Coastal Health, you will:
• Foster collaborative working relationships that support the clinical practice and ongoing development of primary care physicians, nurse practitioners and VCH staff with an expectation on providing team based primary care.
• Establish and maintain effective and regular communication links with the physician & nurse practitioner (MRP) team, to ensure effective engagement, efficient working, and a supportive, safe, collegial working environment.
• Ensure integration of medical practice at a local level by communicating both the strategic priorities of VCH and local operational goals. Similarly, ensure engagement and communication with the MRP team in relation to these priorities. Implement primary care program strategy and initiatives in partnership with the Operations Manager and the local leadership team.
• Integrated, strategic & shared decision making in partnership with the Primary Care Operations Manager (clinical-operations dyad) pertaining to local clinic operations. The Medical Coordinator and Operations Manager will each have individual as well as shared areas of accountability and decision making. They will collaborate together to advance site based service delivery within their individual and shared responsibilities, requiring close partnership and clarity of communication.
• Work in direct dyad partnership with local site leadership (Operations Manager) and in matrix partnership with other site dyad teams to advance program and organization priorities as defined by Program Leadership (Program Director and Program Medical Director) and Vancouver Community leadership (Vancouver Community Vice President and Vancouver Community Senior Medical Director). Each site will work in matrix partnership with the other four primary care sites to support program goals and client care needs across the program.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop, manage and evaluate clinical programming, ensuring consideration of client needs, service delivery and team relationships within a complex primary care environment.
• Create and maintain an environment of evidence-based clinical practice that fosters professional growth, wellness and development of physicians and nurse practitioners; encourages participation in quality improvement & research; and supports opportunities for teaching and education of medical students, residents and other VCH colleagues. Coordinate and oversee teaching site specific teaching schedules.
• Support delivery/implementation of relevant clinical guidelines at the local level, and develop/implement an evaluation process to measure the quality of clinical care rendered with the resources allocated at the clinic level.
• Develop and use conflict resolution pathways with the MRP team and ensure early engagement of the Program Medical Director, as well as NP leadership for NP staff, in such situations.
• Implement effective performance management processes for clinic-based physicians as a shared, step-wise process in conjunction with the Program Medical Director. For clinic-based NPs, this work will include partnership with NP leadership.
• Ensure clarification of roles, adherence to accreditation standards and practice standards for safe delivery of high quality primary care.
• In conjunction with the operational manager partner, help to ensure adherence to legislation, safety standards and VCH policies to provide a healthy and safe environment for patients and staff.
• Work with operational administrative support to coordinate an efficient, effective and comprehensive medical staff work schedule and on-call schedule for the site, in collaboration with other VCH colleague scheduling.
• Recruit and retain locum and contracted physician and NP staff, in partnership with the Program Medical Director and NP leadership.
• Co-ordinate the orientation and initial support for new site-specific medical staff and locums.
• Work with operational administrative support +/- operations manager to monitor/track the physician budget, invoicing, and contract delivery.
• Represent VCH and advocate for the work of the Primary Care team as a medical leader in both internal & external settings.
• Coordinate program-level medical education for physicians and nurse practitioners.
• Support the implementation of program Quality Improvement initiatives with the support of Primary Care program leadership, including the program Quality Improvement Advisor.
