Job Description

Department of Medical Imaging, Division of Diagnostic Radiology

Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University

ACADEMIC POSITION: Body Imaging Radiologist

The Department of Medical Imaging, Division of Diagnostic Radiology, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, at Western University, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care is seeking a Body Imaging Radiologist for a full-time clinical academic appointment to Western University. Rank (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) and appointment status (limited term or continuing) will be determined by experience and qualifications at the time of appointment.

The Department of Medical Imaging at Western University is in transition to an integrated city-wide sub-specialty practice across the three Hospital sites: University Hospital (UH) and Victoria Hospital (VH), collectively known as the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), and St. Joseph’s Health Care London (St. Joseph’s). The Department provides multiple regional services to a population of >2M.

There are opportunities for an enthusiastic radiologist to contribute to the building of an integrated, multi-disciplinary and collegial Academic Medical Imaging Department in the Body Imaging Division.

Position Profile: The successful candidate will be appointed in a full-time Clinical Academic appointment in the Department of Medical Imaging at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. The successful candidate will take an active role in the Citywide Body Imaging Subspecialty Division and must be dedicated to outstanding quality in clinical operations, demonstrate leadership, teaching and/or research abilities. The successful candidate will have completed a Fellowship in Body Imaging Radiology, must have an interest in academic radiology and will need to be committed to outstanding quality in clinical operations, including patient care, teaching and research. The academic component of this position is predominately located at LHSC – University Hospital and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. One day of protected academic time to support research and teaching is provided. Consideration of applicants will include an assessment of previous performance in teaching, research, and health care leadership, as well as qualifications (including subspecialty and enhanced training), experience, and interpersonal skills.

The successful candidate will join a division of 33 dedicated Body radiologists. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate successful team building skills in addition to the advanced diagnostic and interventional skills required for this position. There are excellent established collaborations across all affiliated Body disciplines with frequent participation in multi-disciplinary rounds and a full complement of diagnostic and interventional procedures.

Infrastructure: City wide fleet replacement with state-of-the-art Computed Tomography (six Aquilion ONE 320 Genesis Edition, and one Aquilion Prime), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (three 3.0T, and three 1.5T) and interventional angiography suites (three biplane and four single plane units) in combination with strong Industry-Academic partnerships will strengthen the academic mission.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will hold certification in Diagnostic Radiology with the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada or international equivalent and will need to meet the current credentialing requirements of LHSC and St. Joseph’s. Candidates must have an MD, or equivalent, and must be eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario. Subspecialty Fellowship training in Body Imaging is required. Additional sub-specialty expertise in another area will be a distinct advantage. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, team player and be willing to participate in all aspects of academic imaging and intervention including on-call duties as required by the Chair/Chief of the Department.

Compensation Details: Estimated total remuneration from all sources, including fee for service and alternative funding plan, will be in the range of $350,000 - $500,000 annually and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The City: London, Ontario. London is Canada’s 11th largest city with a population over 400,000, a catchment area of 2 million, and is situated in southwestern Ontario between Toronto and Detroit. The region has a diverse economy and excellent educational opportunities. It is a safe and diverse city and its numerous parks, trails, recreational, cultural and sporting opportunities make it an attractive place to live.

The University: Western University is a research-intensive university with full-time enrolment of about 34,000 students with a full range of academic and professional programs. The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry provides an outstanding educational experience within a research-intensive environment where tomorrow's physicians, dentists and health researchers learn to be socially responsible leaders in the advancement of human health.

Western, like many postsecondary institutions in Canada, is moving beyond sole reliance upon Indigenous self-identification in its hiring processes. This is to safeguard against the use of incorrect, incomplete, or misleading information in circumstances in which a candidate has made a declaration of Indigenous citizenship or membership. Candidates who are invited for an interview or who are short-listed, and who have made a declaration of Indigenous citizenship or membership for material advantage at Western, including where required or preferred for the position, will be asked to have their declaration of Indigenous citizenship or membership affirmed through a relational accountability process, led by the Office of Indigenous Initiatives (OII), that is consistent with Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing. Please contact the OII directly for details on the affirmation processes: https://indigenous.uwo.ca/. The policy can be viewed at: POLICY 1.58 - Affirming Declarations of Indigenous Citizenship or Membership at Western University.

London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC):  One of Canada’s largest acute-care teaching hospitals, LHSC is dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching and research. For more than 138 years, LHSC has provided patient care for the people of London, the region, and beyond. Many national and international medical breakthroughs have been pioneered at LHSC, to the benefit of patients locally and around the world including the routine use of robotic surgical techniques for coronary artery bypass surgeries, routine and novel approaches for transcatheter aortic valve implantations, minimally invasive mitral valve reconstructions and complex reconstruction techniques of the entire thoracic aorta – all of which are heavily reliant on preoperative and postoperative multimodality imaging consultations. LHSC is also home to a strong established surgical program, the regional trauma center, and the London Regional Cancer Program (LRCP), a world class cancer care facility that provides comprehensive care to oncology patients from across Southwestern Ontario.

London Medical Imaging Associates (LMIA):  As a physician team providing a suite of diagnostic and interventional services in medical imaging, LMIA strives for high quality patient-centered care, academic excellence and innovation based on the robust relationships with the London Hospitals and University. LMIA physicians have built enduring clinical collaborations with local and regional partners through collegiality and respect. Beyond augmenting clinical proficiency across multiple disciplines, we value and have a well-established culture of commitment to teaching, research and administration.

Research: The Department of Medical Imaging supports and encourages opportunities to engage in imaging related research with the Robarts Research Institute (www.robarts.ca) and Lawson Health Research Institute (www.lawsonresearch.ca), in association with Western University and Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry.

For further information: Interested candidates are invited to contact the Medical Imaging Site Director at University Hospital for information regarding LHSC; the Division Head for Divisional structure and responsibilities; and the Chair/Chief to discuss Department strategy and direction.
