Job Description

Are you ready to lead groundbreaking advancements in psychiatric care while shaping the future of education and research? The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care London, are seeking a dynamic, visionary leader to join our organizations as the Chair/Chief/Head of the Department of Psychiatry. This is an unparalleled opportunity to lead one of our largest, most innovative departments driving excellence in clinical care, pioneering research, and transforming the way mental health services are delivered across London, Windsor, and throughout southwestern Ontario. If you are passionate about advancing mental health care, nurturing the next generation of leaders, and making an enduring impact, this is the role for you. Step into the future of psychiatry and be at the forefront of revolutionizing mental health care.

The Department of Psychiatry has established a standard of excellence in its academic endeavours that has grown out of the development of strong divisions with committed leaders. There is overlap and collaboration across the divisions, ensuring a strong centralized academic department; the divisions also provide opportunity for individuals with specific interests and expertise to thrive academically. Each academic division has a strong link, through membership, with clinical programs in our affiliated teaching hospitals and research institutions. Our affiliated teaching institutions include London Health Sciences Centre, Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Care London, the Child and Parent Resource Institute, and Madame Vanier Children’s Centre. Our research affiliations are with Lawson Research Institute and London Health Sciences Centre Research Institute.

The Chair/Chief/Head will have the vision to expand the strengths of integrated clinical, teaching, and research programs. The successful applicant must have a strong record of clinical service, quality improvement, operational effectiveness, and leadership in both clinical and research activities.  Furthermore, the successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in scholarship and the vision to expand the strengths of integrated teaching and research programs of the department. Ideally, they will have prior experience leading and supporting Clinical Services, including quality, patient safety, risk, and operations. Additionally, they must have a record of building and strengthening relations with diverse populations within the community. They will be an excellent communicator, collaborator, and leader with the ability to expertly manage multiple key priorities across the University, the hospitals, and partners in the community and beyond.

The successful candidate must be an accomplished clinician with an MD or equivalent and eligible to be certified as a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario. Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience and will be composed primarily of the following sources: fee for service, alternate funding plan, and academic support. The successful candidate will hold a full-time continuing Clinical Academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The position is an initial 5-year term, normally renewable once.

Western University delivers an academic experience second to none. Western challenges the best and brightest faculty, staff, and students to commit to the highest global standards. Our research excellence expands knowledge and drives discovery with real-world application. Western attracts individuals with a broad worldview, seeking to study, influence, and lead in the international community. Since 1878, The Western Experience has combined academic excellence with life-long opportunities for intellectual, social, and cultural growth to better serve our communities.

London Health Sciences Centre is a tertiary care health complex, providing comprehensive care to a large and geographically extended population of approximately 1.2 million people, including London which has a metropolitan census of 530,000. One of Canada’s largest acute-care, research-intensive academic hospitals, with 15,000 physicians, staff, students, scientists, and volunteers, LHSC is regarded for its exceptional patient care and health-care advancement through innovative partnerships, teaching excellence, breakthrough research, and a rich history of national and international medical firsts. LHSC’s mental health and addictions program provides acute inpatient and ambulatory mental health and addictions services for adults and children. All of our services are provided by a highly specialized inter-disciplinary team.

St. Joseph’s Health Care London is a leading academic health centre in Canada comprised of five sites. The five sites have distinct and widely diverse roles, which makes St. Joseph’s one of Canada’s most unique and innovative health care organizations. St. Joseph’s London has a legacy of providing quality and exceptional care for patients for more than 150 years.  St. Joseph’s is a regional provider of inpatient and ambulatory specialized mental health care services aligned across two sites: The Finch Family Mental Health Care Building at Parkwood Institute and the Southwest Centre for Forensic Mental Health Care.
