Assistant Professor
Full-Time Clinician-Investigator
St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto, and the Department of Psychiatry, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto are recruiting a Clinician-Investigator (FTE 1.0) to join the BARLO MS Centre to develop and grow neuropsychiatric clinical services and research activities in the area of multiple sclerosis.
The BARLO MS Centre, launched in 2021, is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to providing comprehensive, integrated and patient-centred care by a highly-skilled multidisciplinary team. The three pillars of clinical excellence, research and education form the driving vision for the BARLO MS Centre, and the successful candidate will join an established team of neurologists, psychiatrists, allied health professionals and scientists. Over 10,000 individuals are registered to receive care at the BARLO MS Centre.
By joining the BARLO MS Centre, the recruited neuropsychiatrist will also be joining St. Michael’s Hospital, which is located in the heart of downtown Toronto and serves a diverse community. The hospital and department are committed to providing care to vulnerable and marginalized populations and delivering care that is accessible to all and accountable to the values of equity, inclusion and anti-racism. Applicants must be eligible for full-time clinical academic appointment at the University of Toronto at the level of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate must hold a Medical Degree and certification in Psychiatry by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and have or be eligible of independent licensure in Ontario. As the role will require expertise in research methods and neuropsychiatric care for patients with multiple sclerosis, applicants are required to have an advanced MSc or PhD degree and fellowship clinical training in multiple sclerosis.
The ideal candidate will have exemplary clinical skills and be equipped to work in an active interdisciplinary clinical. Primary clinical responsibilities will be joining the BARLO MS Centre to provide psychiatric care under the Division of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry. Research responsibilities will include leading and collaborating on research activities, maintaining an active publication record, securing external funding for research and participation on hospital and university research committees. Dissemination of research is expected through presentations at academic meetings and conferences and other knowledge translation activities.
The candidate will also have educational responsibilities, which will include seminar and clinical teaching, and potentially overseeing undergraduate learners, postgraduate residents, research students and fellows. Dedication to learner education and involvement in academic activities are essential components of this position.
As a full-time member of the Department, the candidate will provide Psychiatry on-call service as part of their clinical responsibilities.
Remuneration will be based on fees for service, available sessional and stipends and academic funds. Applications will be reviewed until December 19, 2025, after which the posting will close. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2026, but negotiable.
