ACADEMIC ANESTHESIOLOGIST
Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine
Queen’s Health Sciences
The Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, is accepting applications for a Clinical Academic Anesthesiologist. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing clinical care and academic/scholarly service in the field of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. This position is to fill an existing vacancy within the University. Candidates must possess a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada fellowship or equivalent with additional clinical or research fellowship training. Candidates must also be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The position will consist of a mix of clinical anesthesiology, teaching and research. The position includes general, pediatric, obstetric and postoperative management of patients.
Clinical Responsibilities:
o Provide high-quality anesthetic care across a broad range of surgical specialties, including obstetrics, perioperative assessment, intraoperative management, and postoperative care.
o Contribute to departmental call coverage as part of a collegial, team-based model.
o Support quality improvement initiatives aimed at optimizing patient safety, efficiency, and clinical outcomes.
Teaching & Education:
o Teach and supervise medical students, residents, and fellows in the operating room, simulation environment, and academic sessions.
o Contribute to curriculum development, assessment methodologies, and educational innovation within the department.
o Provide mentorship and career guidance to trainees, fostering a supportive and productive learning environment.
o Participate in faculty development activities and maintain excellence in teaching evaluations.
Scholarly & Research Activity:
o Engage in scholarly work, which may include clinical research, education-focused scholarship, quality-improvement research, or knowledge translation.
o Support research teams involved in grant applications, ethics submissions, and dissemination of findings through presentations or publications.
o Participate in the department’s research mission by attending journal clubs, scholarly rounds, and collaborative academic initiatives.
Professional Service & Academic Citizenship:
o Demonstrate a commitment to collegiality, professionalism, and equity within the department and the broader Faculty of Health Sciences.
o Participate in hospital, university, and national committees as appropriate to support the academic mission.
o Contribute to community engagement, continuing professional development, and advocacy in areas relevant to anesthesiology and patient care.
Qualified applicants will hold an MD degree (or equivalent). Preference will be given to applicants who have a strong track record or postgraduate education for innovative scholarly work. Applicants must
demonstrate strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions as well as evidence of an ability to work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment. Referees who can attest to the applicant’s expertise are required.
Members of the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine enjoy a competitive compensation package, including a generous benefits plan. Compensation is determined in accordance with the Department’s Practice Plan policies for clinical academic faculty.
