Job Description
The Emergency Department at North York General (NYG) is seeking to hire an emergency physician to commence in the department in July 2027.
Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency is one of the largest and busiest Emergency Departments in the Greater Toronto Area, with an average of 330 patients seen per day and an annual volume of over 120,000 patient visits. It serves both pediatric (>15% of patient volume) and adult members of the community, with approximately 25% aged 65 or older.
The role of the ED is to deliver exceptional people-centred care 24/7, harnessing data, innovation, and digital tools to deliver a faster, smarter, and more human emergency care journey. The ED is committed to NYG’s strategic plan through its people-centred clinical services plan, grounded in integrity, compassion, acceptance, respect, and excellence.
Provision of Specialized Excellence and Personalized Experiences: The ED aims to accelerate the movement of evidence into practice by supporting teams to test, refine, and scale solutions. The team leverages data-driven insights, digital innovation, and collaborative design to ensure the best ideas translate into measurable improvements in patient experience, quality of care, and operational flow.
Leading in Health Equity and Connected Care: The ED also aims to be the premier centre of excellence in geriatric emergency care in Ontario, transforming the emergency experience for older adults through specialized clinical pathways, integrated community partnerships, and age-friendly design.
Celebrating Excellence in People and Culture: The ED is committed to being Canada’s most sought-after Community Academic Emergency Department, founded in patients’ trust and where the best clinicians want to practice, learners are inspired, and people are proud to work.
North York General has developed an international reputation as a leader in emergency medicine education. We are affiliated with the University of Toronto’s Temerty School of Medicine. Medical students, family medicine residents, family medicine emergency residents, and Royal College emergency residents rotate through the emergency department.
Remuneration is via the ED Workload Alternate Funding Arrangement (AFA), with a blend of flat-rate and shadow billing. Applicants can expect to be scheduled 10-14 shifts per month with the opportunity to pick up additional shifts.
We welcome applicants from across Canada. Eligible candidates will hold or be eligible for either the CCFP(EM) or FRCPC in Emergency Medicine credential, hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and be eligible for a faculty appointment within the Division of Emergency Medicine within either the Department of Family and Community Medicine or the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
The ED at North York General values diversity and is fostering a culture of belonging that enhances our ability to meet the needs of our diverse community. We value applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and recognize that diverse perspectives, experiences, and expertise are essential to serving our patients better.
