General Practitioner in Oncology (GPO) Cancer Care Alberta (CCA), Integrated Cancer Diagnosis & Intake Initiative
Cancer Care Alberta (CCA) invites applications for General Practitioner in Oncology (GPO) roles to join a new initiative supporting cancer diagnosis and intake activities.
Position Summary
GPOs will act as Most Responsible Providers (MRPs) during the diagnostic and cancer intake phase, guiding patients through clinical assessments, coordinating tests, and helping patients to prepare for consultations with oncology specialists. Activities include both clinical services and program development responsibilities.
Details:
• Location: Tertiary sites (Cross Cancer Institute, Edmonton and Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Calgary). Activities will include a component of virtual care service delivery.
• Reports To: Medical Advisor, Integrated Cancer Diagnosis & Intake Initiative, Cancer Care Alberta
• Time Commitment: (0.2–1.0 FTE, flexible), multiple opportunities available
• Start Date: anticipated January 2, 2026
• Compensation: clinical services will be compensated through fee-for-service billings. For non-billable work, CCA will provide compensation in line with CCA guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties, Coordination and Navigation
• Assist in assessing new referrals from Primary Care, Specialty Care, Urgent Care, and/or Emergency departments for:
1. Unattached patients with high suspicion of cancer.
2. Patients with high suspicion of cancer with primary unknown or metastatic disease.
• Determine investigations needed to establish diagnosis including reviewing and ordering tests for lab, diagnostic imaging, pathology, and other necessary investigations.
• Assess needs for symptom management and access to supportive care.
• Manage symptoms, and urgent findings.
• Ensure patients are ready for specialist consultation with Oncology.
• Provide informed, safe care, including virtual visits.
• Document in Connect Care and communicate with referring providers and multidisciplinary teams.
• Help to resolve incomplete referrals.
• Work closely with intake nurses and diagnostic teams to support timely access to investigations and care.
• Participate in case-based multidisciplinary reviews.
• Ensure smooth transitions for patients as they move from intake to oncology specialists or allied health services.
• Service will include a combination of on-site and virtual clinics.
Program Development Support
• Collaborate with leadership and teams on design of workflow, referral criteria and clinical order sets.
• Support care quality improvement using various metrics (i.e. wait times, consult readiness).
• Support education and operational planning activities.
• Attend initiative and program related service and quality meetings.
• Support reporting and data tracking.
Qualifications
MD (Family or Internal Medicine); eligible for CPSA licensure for independent practice. Previous experience in Oncology related roles is an asset. Skills in the process of triage, virtual care, and use and development of standardized protocols, and familiarity with Connect Care and quality improvement are an asset.
