Job Description
The division of General Surgery at North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) is seeking a locum general surgeon for a 6 month period to cover a parental leave. Candidates must be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and hold an independent license to practice general surgery in Ontario.
Position Start Time: November 1, 2026
Duration of position: 6 months, until May 1, 2027
On call: 1 in 6
Preferred skills: Community general surgery, Endoscopy, Oncoplastic breast surgery
Remuneration: OHIP fee for service, HOC stipend. Overhead to be split with colleagues.
EMR: Meditech Expanse at NBRHC, Accuro at office.
Existing physicians: 5 full time general surgeons, 1 additional on call general surgeon
Existing support staff: 1 receptionist, 5 medical secretaries (1:1 support)
NBRHC is a busy community hospital with 489 beds located 3.5 hours north of Toronto. It is one the major acute care hospitals serving a catchment area in Northeastern Ontario of approximately 130,000. Clinical resources include a 16-bed closed ICU, 8 ORs, CT, MRI, and advanced laparoscopic and breast surgery equipment including MOLLI. The general surgeons practice as a collegial group with full complement of shared resources including dedicated elective OR time, endoscopy time, minor procedure and ambulatory care clinic resources, and office space. The division of General Surgery is a committed community teaching site for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, with regular resident and medical school learners. Multiple clinical supports are available locally in the form of other surgical specialties (Obstetrics/Gynecology, Urology, Orthopedics, ENT, Opthalmology) and Interventional Radiology.
Situated between Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake, the City of North Bay offers a combination of lush forests, spring-fed water and clean air which creates a healthy environment for working, living, and raising a family. A variety of recreational opportunities exist in the community provided by the natural environment trails for biking, walking, hiking. Activities for all seasons include beaches, a municipal marina, golf, recreational arenas, skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
