Geriatric Psychiatry seeking a Geriatric Psychiatrist Full-time Permanent Faculty Position
The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) Mental Health program is a Schedule 1 Facility under the Mental Health Act, which operates the following general psychiatry acute care programs and services at two campuses (Civic and General):
· Psychiatric Emergency Services
· Inpatient Service
· Outpatient Clinics (including Urgent Consult Clinic)
· Acute Partial Hospitalization
· Consultation Programs & Medical/Surgical Liaison Service
The Ottawa Hospital also provides specialized programs and/or services:
· Mobile Crisis Team & Community Crisis Stabilization Beds
· Champlain District First Episode Psychosis Program (regional program)
· Perinatal Mental Health Services
· Regional Program for the Treatment of Eating Disorder
· Community Treatment Order Coordinator
· Transitional Care Units
We currently have an opening for a geriatric psychiatrist working as part of an interdisciplinary consultation team in both geriatric and general adult psychiatry. This academic position would be 0.8 FTE clinical and 0.2 FTE of career development time. Additional career development time can be negotiated for those with research interests.
Job duties:
· Provide specialized psychiatric care with a focus on older adults 4 days per week, with 1 day per week for research and career development.
· Consults with other health care providers to devise a plan to manage other health issues or medications that may be impacting the patient’s mental status.
· Develops and implements treatment plans, including prescription of medications.
· Monitors and evaluates treatment results.
· Evaluates patients by interviewing patients, families, and other persons; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; selecting, administering, and interpreting psychological tests; and ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results.
· Maintains historical records by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events and writing summaries.
· Updates job knowledge by participating in continuing medical educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, participating in professional organizations, and be actively involved in education quality improvement projects.
· Provide education and mentorship to multidisciplinary team members, and clinical supervision and educational guidance to a diverse group of medical learners, including medical students, psychiatry residents, off-service residents, and geriatric psychiatry subspecialty residents and fellows.
Required Education, Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
· Expertise in and commitment to treatment of patients in a fast-paced acute psychiatry academic setting.
· Demonstrated experience as a Geriatric Psychiatrist in a multidisciplinary team.
· Eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
· Meet criteria to apply for and receive appropriate medical staff privileges at The Ottawa Hospital.
· Meet criteria to receive an academic appointment at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine to supervise learners.
· Candidates with experience providing neurostimulation treatments and those holding a Master’s or PhD degree are strongly encouraged to apply.
· Demonstrated experience in assessing the patient's needs and delivering patient entered care
· Demonstrated experience in participating as an active member of the health care team
· Demonstrated experience in communicating effectively in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines.
· Identifies a commitment to personal continuing education activities.
· Ability to communicate in a bilingual environment (French & English) is preferred.
Approximate wage range: $300,000 – $400,000
Primary source of income is Fee-for-Service Remuneration (e.g. billings to Ontario Health Insurance Plan) supplemented by Sessional Funds, payments from hospital Alternate Funding Plan for academic activities and Hospital On-Call Coverage stipends.
Benefits: Successful applicants will work in a hospital privileges model. Remuneration is fee for service with alternate funding plan for academic work.
