Job Description
The UHN Mental Health Program and Seniors Mental Health Division is seeking to recruit a Clinician-Teacher to be based at Toronto General Hospital. The successful applicant should be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. The position is available from November 1, 2026, with the start date flexible and negotiable based on the successful candidate's availability.
The Seniors Mental Health Division at UHN provides services for seniors across UHN in multiple clinical settings. Inpatient services include: consultation to acute care medical and surgical units, geriatric psychiatry inpatient beds (Toronto General Hospital), and the Specialized Dementia Unit (Toronto Rehab). Outpatient services include: The University Health Network Memory Clinic (Toronto Western Hospital and Toronto Rehab), and Seniors Mental Health outpatient clinics (Toronto General Hospital and West Park). There are also a number of outreach programs, including mental health services to long term care homes, UHN transitional and complex continuing care sites, the Virtual Behavioural Medicine program, and the Independence at Home program.
We have an opportunity for a geriatric psychiatrist to be based at Toronto General Hospital (TGH). TGH is one of Canada's leading acute care hospitals and is internationally recognized for excellence in medicine, surgery, and transplantation, serving a diverse downtown Toronto community.
There are three key areas of clinical need within Seniors Mental Health at UHN: 1) providing geriatric psychiatry Consultation-Liaison (C-L) services at TGH; 2) delivering outreach mental health services to long-term care homes affiliated with UHN; 3) providing coverage for the Virtual Behavioural Medicine program and the Specialized Dementia Unit at Toronto Rehab. The applicant should have an interest in practicing in at least two of these areas of geriatric psychiatry.
The successful applicant must hold MD and FRCPC qualifications (or applied for the FRCPC examination in psychiatry) and have or be eligible for licensure as a psychiatrist in the province of Ontario as stipulated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). The successful candidate is also required to have subspecialty clinical training in geriatric psychiatry and be eligible to apply for or have completed the Royal College Geriatric Psychiatry subspecialty examination.
This position offers a strong combination of clinical and academic responsibilities, including opportunities to contribute to the development and evaluation of innovative models of care, service improvement initiatives, and quality enhancement projects. Applicants with a demonstrated academic interest in geriatric consultation-liaison psychiatry are particularly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will also participate in teaching and mentorship across undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate, and fellowship training programs. Experience in teaching and supervising learners in geriatric psychiatry is considered an asset.
Academic rank, salary, and contractual arrangements will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Compensation will depend on the volume of clinical work performed and is based on a fee-for-service billing model. Total remuneration is expected to be within the typical range for an experienced psychiatrist practicing in Ontario.
Depending on the final role and job description, additional support may be available for protected academic, research, and program development time through a variety of funding mechanisms within UHN Mental Health.
Interested individuals should send a covering letter and copy of their curriculum vitae to: Dr. Andrea Iaboni, Medical Lead, Seniors Mental Health, UHN Mental Health at email ***@uhn.ca (🔒 Premium)
The University Health Network and the University of Toronto are strongly committed to diversity within their communities and especially welcome applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, members of sexual minority groups, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
