Hospitalist Locum Opportunities for Family Physicians and Internists

Health Sciences North (HSN), the premier healthcare facility for Northeastern Ontario, is actively recruiting dedicated healthcare professionals eager to make a meaningful impact in a dynamic and evolving healthcare system. As the region’s tertiary care referral center, HSN serves a diverse population of over 600,000 residents.
The HSN Hospitalist Service is currently seeking Family Physicians and Internists to provide locum coverage during various blocks in the summer and fall of 2025. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a well-established, high-performing team within a leading healthcare institution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coverage Schedule: Weekly blocks (Monday to Friday) and weekend blocks (Saturday & Sunday)
- Daytime Rounding Hours: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
- Collaborate with nursing staff to discuss patient care and treatment plans.
- Consult with medical and surgical subspecialties as necessary.
- Manage an average of 18-25 patients daily during the week and an average of 25-32 daily during the weekend
- On-Call Responsibilities:
- Handle new admissions from the ER and manage patients admitted under the Hospitalist Service (approximately 125-160 patients).
- Daily ER admissions range from 10-18 patients; admissions are taken from the ER and the typical expectation is to do 3-5 admissions, hold orders will be placed on the remaining admissions, and they will be divided amongst the Hospitalist staff the following morning.
Compensation: Compensation includes a combination of fee-for-service billings to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) and additional stipendiary support for clinical and on-call duties, as follows:
- $500 per day for daytime rounding (Monday to Friday)
- $700 per day for daytime rounding (Saturday and Sunday)
- $150 per daytime call shift (8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Thursday)
- $700 per nighttime call shift (4:00 PM to 8:00 AM, Monday to Thursday)
- $1,950 per 24-hour Friday call shift (8:00 AM to 8:00 AM)
- $2,000 per 24-hour weekend call shift (8:00 AM to 8:00 AM, Saturday and Sunday)
Important Notes:
These locum assignments are not eligible for funding through the Northern Specialist Locum Program (NSLP)
Locum physicians will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses
An independent practice license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) is required. Applicants trained in the U.S. must meet the criteria for licensure in Ontario through Pathway A.
