INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST
Cardiac Catheterization & Intervention
Sault Area Hospital (SAH) is seeking the recruitment of an Interventional Cardiologist. Applicants will have completed residency training in Cardiology, and successfully completed their fellowship in Interventional Cardiology that includes at least one year of focused training in clinical coronary intervention. The Sault Area Hospital Interventional Cardiology Program started in 2018, and is founded on a strategic and long-term partnership with the interventional program at St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto. The SAH program has been highly successful in its first 4 years, offering 24-7 primary PCI and is on track to do over 400 PCIs and 1000 diagnostic caths/year, with the building of a 2nd cath lab currently underway. The successful applicant will join a cohesive cardiology team including another full-time interventional cardiologist, a diagnostic invasive cardiologist and a level 3 echocardiographer. The successful applicant will be cross-appointed at St. Michael’s Hospital, to facilitate access to complex and high risk PCI, and will be fully supported by the St. Michael’s interventional cardiology group.
Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario is located on the St. Mary’s River between Lake Huron and Lake Superior on the U.S. /Canadian border. The Sault has all the amenities of a regional urban centre, with both the Canadian wilderness and extraordinary vacation areas in Ontario as well as Michigan just minutes away. There is a strong cultural and arts basis in the community, and both winter and summer outdoor activities abound. The Sault has an excellent school system and offers a multitude of sports and artistic opportunities for children and adults alike. Sault Ste. Marie is served by three Canadian airlines as well as one major U.S. airline.
Sault Area Hospital has approximately 2700 dedicated staff, physicians and volunteers who work together to deliver outstanding care and services to a catchment population of approximately 115,000. With an approved complement of nearly 300 beds in spectacular new facilities, SAH provides primary, secondary and select tertiary services to residents in Sault Ste. Marie and the District of Algoma. In addition to providing core services in Emergency and Critical Care; Medicine; Surgery; Obstetrics, Maternity & Paediatrics; Mental Health and Addictions; Complex Continuing Care; and Rehabilitation, SAH is also home to the Algoma Regional Renal Program and the Algoma District Cancer Program.
The Group Health Centre (GHC) is a progressive, multi-specialty, ambulatory care health organization and is one of Canada's first consumer-sponsored health care facilities built with private funds donated by local union members. As Ontario's largest and longest established alternatively funded healthcare organization, the GHC serves over 60,000 Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District residents.
The internal medicine program is represented by specialists in cardiology, critical care, gastroenterology, general internal medicine, geriatrics, hematology, infectious diseases, medical oncology, nephrology, respirology and rheumatology. Additionally, there is diagnostic imaging support which includes state-of-the-art 1.5 Tesla MRI and two CT Scanners with access to interventional DI. The hospital supports a full-time pulmonary function lab, endoscopy unit, nuclear medicine and ultrasonography. Sault Area Hospital has a medicine program comprised of the following a hospitalist program for orphan patients, a family medicine program, General internal medicine unit and ED Medical consults & follow-up clinic.
Candidates must possess or be able to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine in Ontario with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Affiliation with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) provides the opportunity to teach residents and medical students.
The Ontario Ministry of Health Northern and Rural Recruitment & Retention Initiative provides an additional $83,000 over a 4 year period for full-time practice in Sault Ste. Marie. Additionally, the Sault Ste. Marie Physician Recruitment & Retention Program provides a relocation allowance of up to $5,000.
