Job Description

Health PEI is looking for a Medical Oncologist to join the collegial, multi-disciplinary team within the Provincial Oncology program.

Medical Oncologists at the PEI Cancer Treatment Centre provide essential care allowing PEI residents to access community-based oncology treatment. The physician group within the Department of Oncology includes Radiation Oncologists, Malignant Hematologists and Family Medicine–Oncology physicians who work collaboratively through each phase of a patient’s journey with malignancy. Typical day to day responsibilities include outpatient consultation and on-treatment assessment clinics, inpatient consultation service and on-call inquiries.

The Prince Edward Island Cancer Treatment Centre is located at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, PEI. A satellite clinic at Prince County Hospital, Summerside also provides patients from Western PEI access to systemic therapy and follow-up care. While successful candidates will typically be based out of Charlottetown, travel to Summerside may be required on an intermittent basis to meet system needs.

Prince Edward Island (PEI) is renowned for its people, arts, culture, food, and innovation. With more than 1,000 kms of shoreline and beaches, acres of gentle farmland, vibrant cities and smaller communities, National and Provincial parks, and an island-wide trail system, it is no surprise that individuals and families from around the world have chosen to call this island ‘home’. It is easy to come and go from Prince Edward Island. From direct flights out of Charlottetown airport, to a toll bridge in Borden, to a beautiful ferry ride, you are closer than you think to your next destination. International airports are nearby in Moncton, NB and Halifax, NS.

In addition to professional fulfillment, practicing in PEI means living in one of Canada’s most scenic destinations. With its safe, welcoming communities and breathtaking landscapes year-round, PEI offers both natural beauty and an exceptional quality of life. Whether you seek a small urban or rural setting, you’ll have access to outdoor activities, fresh food from our land and sea, and a vibrant arts and cultural scene. Prince Edward Island is the ideal place for physicians who value both professional satisfaction and personal well-being.

Start Date: Starting September 2026

Positions:

  • 1.0 FTE, Permanent full-time position available.

Please note that this competition may be used to fill future vacancies.

Hours of Work:

  • Full-time hours for a salaried physician is defined as 37.5 hours per week; 1950 hours per year;
  • Full-time contract-for-service hours is based on a maximum of 1,725 hours per year;
  • On-call coverage as required.

Remuneration:

Health PEI offers multiple payment modality options:

  • Fee-for-Service – Under this model, physicians are compensated for each service provided, in accordance with the Tariff of Fees outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. This model offers maximum flexibility in terms of scheduling, service volume, and practice style.

Physicians typically operate through a professional corporation, which may offer tax advantages. Most physicians are responsible for overhead costs, which average around 25% of total billings. While this model does not include paid employment benefits, physicians have access to negotiated benefits through the Physician Services Agreement.

  • Salary – Physicians employed under the salaried model enter into an employee-employer relationship with Health PEI. This model includes a defined schedule, assigned duties, and a comprehensive suite of employment benefits such as:
    • Health and dental coverage
    • Paid vacation and sick leave
    • Life insurance
    • RRSP matching

 Compensation: $224.40 per hour (equivalent to $437,580 annually for a 1.0 FTE)

  • Contract-for-Service – Physicians working under a Contract for Service are compensated hourly, as outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. While this model does not include traditional employment benefits (e.g., paid vacation, health and dental, RRSP matching), it does provide access to negotiated benefits such as parental leave. The hourly rate includes an additional amount in lieu of benefits. This model may offer tax advantages for physicians who choose to incorporate.

 Compensation: $267 per hour (equivalent to $520,650 annually for a 1.0 FTE)

Incentives:

  • Qualified and licensable candidates may be eligible for a return in service grant of up to $100,000 with a 3 year commitment to Health PEI pro-rated to the FTE.
  • Eligible moving expense reimbursement of up to $10,000 is available;
  • Opportunity to teach Medical Learners and Residents with faculty appointment at affiliated universities;
  • Access to hospital-based electronic patient record system with lab and x-ray reports from office; and
  • Other incentives as per the Physician Services Agreement.

Certifications and Eligibility Requirements:
