ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Program of NL Health Services – Eastern Urban Zone is seeking a qualified and highly motivated Medical Microbiologist to join the Public Health and Microbiology Laboratory (PHML) in St. John's, NL.

PHML works within NL Health Services to provide diagnostic services for all patient populations in the province, bridging both acute care and public health microbiology. PHML is continually working to improve state-of-the-art technologies, with current focus on total lab automation, whole genome sequencing, novel laboratory developed assays, CL-3 processing, and wastewater surveillance.

The successful candidate will join a group of clinical and medical microbiologists, with collaboration among molecular and diagnostic pathologists, hematopathologists, and clinical chemists providing the province with tertiary and quaternary laboratory care.

The successful candidate will provide Medical Microbiology (1.0 FTE) services, including participation in the on-call roster shared across microbiologists. Scheduling of clinical work within the division is determined by the Division Head in collaboration with the microbiologists, considering individual interests and skill sets alongside the needs of the division. The successful candidate is expected to build relationships and provide timely expert consultative services to physicians and health care providers, working closely with all clinical care teams including the Antimicrobial Stewardship team, Infectious Diseases, Infection Prevention and Control, and Medical Officers of Health.

All microbiologists are expected to be actively engaged in collaborative research, teaching activities, and scholarship. NL Health Services facilities are closely affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. Through this affiliation and on the recommendation of the Discipline Chair, the successful candidate will be awarded a faculty appointment in the academic discipline of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at a clinical academic rank based on experience and qualifications.
