Job Description
Are you a pediatrician looking for a change of pace that would allow you to easily balance work and personal life, with ample time for family life? Does a 5-to-10-minute walk to work appeal to you or a scenic flight into a northern community, where you will be welcomed with open arms and have access to a culturally robust community, enjoying activities such as fishing, hunting or nature hikes? Then the Sioux Lookout region maybe just for you. This is a fantastic opportunity for a pediatrician looking to practice in a variety of settings, enjoying welcoming community-settings, where the lifestyle opportunities are endless.
The Sioux Lookout Regional Physician Services Inc. (SLRPSI) is currently recruiting for contract/locum pediatricians. SLRPSI provides a competitive earning opportunity, a progressive and collegial team of family physicians and a state-of-the art community hospital (Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre - SLMHC).
Our beautiful, fully accredited hospital – Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre - has 60 beds for inpatient medicine, a 24/7 emergency department with approximately 20,000 visits per year. The state-of-the art hospital also houses a robust surgical, diagnostic imaging (including CT and echocardiograms), rehabilitation (occupational therapy, physiotherapy, etc.) stroke prevention & cardiac rehab programs, including stress testing, pulmonary function testing and an obstetrical department, including an integrated prenatal program.
We currently have two pediatricians working within our team, one who specializes in developmental pediatrics and the other, a general pediatrician who provides consults on a variety of cases with appropriate subspecialties, for necessary referrals where necessary. In addition, we also have a great group of allied health professionals to support our pediatric clients and pediatric clinicians, which include a dedicated children’s programming unit - Developmental Services (DS) – managed by the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority (SLFNHA). The DS program offers children’s services which include, behavioural therapy, autism diagnostics, psychology, FASD diagnostic clinics, developmental pediatrician clinics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech-language pathology, dietary services, audiology services and a transitions program that assists adolescents with developmental disabilities to transition to the adult setting. Our pediatric program is one of our specialty programs, where you can leave your imprint and carve a niche as a Pediatric Practitioner. So, if you want to spend less time commuting, more time enjoying the outdoors and you like living the “good” life, then this opportunity is for you!
If you have never experienced working in the Sioux Lookout area, we strongly suggest that your first time in the region would be for a three-week period, so that you can experience the full scope of opportunities we have to offer. In your first three-week period you will have two full days of orientation within the practice and region, some work in our local E.R., work in one of the Sioux Lookout clinics and travel to one or two of our Northern communities to provide an in-community pediatric clinic.
Sioux Lookout.
The Sioux Lookout area has a population of approximately 5,839 people and is the main health hub for 31 remote First Nations communities north of Sioux Lookout. Many of the northern communities are only accessible by air and have a population of more than 32,000 people. Sioux Lookout is known as the “Hub of the North” as it is a lead provider of multiple services including healthcare.
The town of Sioux Lookout is a close-knit community located in northwestern Ontario, nestled within a network of lakes, endless forest, and the rugged Canadian shield. Living in Sioux Lookout means enjoying an excellent quality of life and the amenities of a larger city, paired with the friendly support of a small town.[1] If you are an outdoor enthusiast, you will be in your element with access to many lakes for swimming and fishing, beaches, kayaking, boating, walking trails, beach volleyball, tennis courts, bocce courts, golfing and cycling; in the winter you can enjoy hockey, recreational skating, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, fat biking and ice fishing. Year round you can enjoy the programs and services available at the Sioux Lookout recreational centre and enjoy arts/music provided by the Sioux-Hudson Entertainment Series.
Remuneration information
Pediatricians who provide contract/locum coverage will be reimbursed on a per diem basis. A typical work week consists of a 45-hour schedule, plus the opportunity to provide various on-call services. All remuneration is based on a pre-set fee schedule. Our program is also supported by the Northern Specialist Locum Program (NSLP).
