Job Description
The Sioux Lookout Regional Physician Services Inc. (SLRPSI) is currently recruiting for contract/locum Psychiatrists. SLRPSI provides a competitive earning opportunity, a progressive and collegial team of family physicians/nurse practitioners and other physician specialists (Pediatricians, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology), and a state-of-the art community hospital (Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre - SLMHC).
Are you looking for a change of pace that would allow you to easily balance work and personal life, with ample time for family life? Does a 5-to-10-minute walk to work appeal to you or a scenic flight into a northern community, where you will be welcomed with open arms and have access to a culturally robust community, enjoying activities such as fishing, hunting or nature hikes? Then the Sioux Lookout region maybe just for you! This is a fantastic opportunity for Psychiatrists looking to practice in a variety of settings, enjoying welcoming community-settings, where the lifestyle opportunities are endless.
Our beautiful, fully accredited hospital – Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre - has 60 beds for inpatient medicine, a 24/7 emergency department with approximately 20,000 visits per year. The mental health and addictions program includes social workers and counselors who provide crisis and long-term counseling. There is also a Rapid Access Addictions Medicine (RAAM) clinic, that operates 5 days per week, offering walk-in addictions services. SLRPSI family physicians provide most of the services at the hospital, as well as two outpatient family medicine clinics in Sioux Lookout, and regular visits to the Northern First Nations communities.
The ”Sioux Lookout Urgent Psychiatry” role fills the gap between existing acute involuntary admissions at regional schedule 1 facilities and longstanding outpatient psychiatry services in Sioux Lookout, which currently has a “several-month” long waitlist. This new psychiatric program will see patients in multiple settings, including an outpatient clinic located in the hospital, the emergency department, and admitted patients on the medicine ward. Psychiatrists will provide diagnostic assessments for patients in crisis who do not require admission, make decisions on pharmacotherapy, counseling, and referrals to community programs. Since there are no designated psychiatric beds in Sioux Lookout, patients requiring admission to a psychiatric unit under a Form 1, will need to be referred to the Kenora (adults age 16+) or Thunder Bay (children & youth less than age 17) psychiatric units. Psychiatrists will work collaboratively with interdisciplinary mental health teams from the hospital and the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority, including psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, family physicians and nurse practitioners.
Sioux Lookout.
The Sioux Lookout area has a population of approximately 5,800 people and is the main health hub for 31 remote First Nations communities north of Sioux Lookout. Many of the northern communities are only accessible by air, with a population of more than 32,000 people. Sioux Lookout is known as the “Hub of the North” as we are a lead provider of multiple services including healthcare.
The town of Sioux Lookout is a close-knit community located in northwestern Ontario, nestled within a network of lakes, endless forests, and the rugged Canadian shield. Living in Sioux Lookout means enjoying an excellent quality of life and the amenities of a larger city, paired with the friendly support of a small town.[1] If you are an outdoor enthusiast, you will be in your element with access to many lakes for swimming and fishing, beaches, kayaking, boating, walking trails, beach volleyball, tennis courts, bocce courts, golfing and cycling; in the winter you can enjoy hockey, recreational skating, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, fat biking and ice fishing. Year round you can enjoy the programs and services available at the Sioux Lookout recreational centre and enjoy the arts/music provided by the Sioux Hudson entertainment series.
Remuneration information
Pyschiatrists who provide contract/locum coverage will be reimbursed on a per diem basis. A typical work week consists of a 45-hour schedule, plus the opportunity to provide various on-call services. All remuneration is based on a pre-set fee schedule. Our program is also supported by the Northern Specialist Locum Program (NSLP). There is no overhead and travel & accommodations are covered by the NSLP.
Our physicians have meaningful work with remote First Nations communities, engage collaboratively with great services and peers at the hospital and clinics, and have a great work-life balance with flexible scheduling. So, if you want to spend less time commuting, more time enjoying the outdoors and you like living the “good” life, then this opportunity is for you!!
