Family Physician Locum Opportunity – Nipigon, Ontario

Flexible Rural Family Medicine Position with Excellent Earning Potential

The Nipigon Doctors Group is seeking a Family Physician to join our well-established six-physician practice while one of our physicians is on maternity leave.

Approximate earning potential: $27,000 per month while maintaining a flexible schedule.

Location

Nipigon, Ontario is located just one hour east of Thunder Bay International Airport on an almost fully divided highway. Our welcoming community of approximately 1,700 residents serves a hospital catchment population of over 4,100. You'll work alongside five experienced family physicians with excellent collegial support and readily available local backup upon request.

Practice & Hospital

The Nipigon District Memorial Hospital includes:

• 12 inpatient beds
• 6-bed Emergency Department
• Long-Term Care unit
• 24-hour laboratory and X-ray services
• Daytime ultrasound
• POCUS available in the Emergency Department

Schedule

We offer exceptional flexibility to create a schedule that works for you.

Typical commitment includes:

• 2 in-person clinic days per week
• 1 x 24-hour home call shift per week

Choose to work:

• Three consecutive days
• Split your schedule throughout the week
• Clinic-only locums will also be considered

Additional clinic and call shifts are available if you would like to increase your workload and income.

Clinical Practice

• Inpatient rounding shared between clinic and call physicians
• Typically 1–4 low-acuity inpatients
• Handover at 9:00 a.m.
• Clinic from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
• Approximately 12–14 patients per clinic day (including some virtual visits)
• Call volume averages 10–20 patient encounters per 24 hours, with most occurring during daytime hours
• Weekday Urgent Care Clinic staffed by a Nurse Practitioner helps manage patient volume

Weekend call opportunities are available approximately every 4–5 weeks and may be covered as a full weekend or split between physicians.

• Approximate monthly earnings: $27,000

Teaching Opportunities

The Nipigon Doctors Group regularly hosts learners from NOSM University. Locum physicians are also welcome to bring residents or medical students as part of a rural learning experience.
