Site Medical Specialty Lead, Surgery
Grace General Hospital
Shared Health and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is accepting applications for Site Medical Specialty Lead, Surgery at the Grace General Hospital (GGH).
The GGH Site Medical Specialty Lead for Surgery is tasked with coordinating effective and efficient delivery of quality care within the Surgery program at GGH.
The GGH Site Medical Lead, Surgery is accountable to the GGH Chief Medical Officer(CMO) for overseeing the delivery of medical services in their specialty area, and working collaboratively with other medical specialty leads at the site. They are also accountable to the WRHA surgical Lead and the Provincial Medical Specialty Lead / Associate Provincial Medical Specialty Lead in working collaboratively with their specialty peers, as it relates to standards of practice within the specialty across the province.
The GGH Site Medical Specialty Lead for Surgery also liaises with the University’s academic program leadership with goal of enhancing the teaching and research activities, where appropriate.
Responsibilities
1) Strategy & Change
Contributes to the development and supports the local implementation of provincial and regional strategies, including:
- Provincial Clinical and Preventative Services Plan (CPSP) – In collaboration with the CMO WRHA surgical Lead and the PMSL, the GGH Site Medical Specialty Lead for Surgery supports the local implementation of the province’s clinical and preventive services plan, in Surgery, liaising with other clinical leaders as appropriate. Ensures that the local implementation supports the site’s Mission Statement.
- Models of Care –Supports the maintenance of current care models and the implementation of new models of care at the local level.
- Metrics – Monitors relevant indicators (service performance, patient outcomes, physician workload and other relevant issues) within a continuous quality improvement model.
- Corporate Management: Participates in the development and monitoring of budgets, ensuring that resources are optimized. Initiates development of new program proposals designed to advance the scope and quality of program services at the site.
2) Clinical Services
Provides leadership in Surgery at GGH, including:
- Standards of Practice – Working with their RHA, Shared Health, facilities and other programs, supports the development and ensures consistent application, of standards of care for specific clinical services across regions. Ensures that the Medical Staff By-law is observed by Site Clinical Service members.
- Quality of Care and Patient Safety - Encourages and facilitates quality improvement efforts within their area and supports improvement efforts targeted at processes that cross other clinical areas. Facilitates ongoing education of staff in Clinical Quality Management initiatives. At the request of the CMO, leads/supports complaint investigations and critical incident/occurrence reviews.
- Interdisciplinary Practice - Works with other disciplines to promote effective interdisciplinary team-based care for patients and clients.
- Patient Access & Flow – Works on optimizing care delivery for patients within the Surgery program. Works collaboratively with the regional Patient Flow Coordinator and other clinical leadership to address access block, and with other services’ operations leaders to ensure that capacity meets any surges in demands.
- Liaison - Liaise clinical leaders to address and work toward resolving concerns and difficulties that arise in clinical practice, in doing so, assist physicians in meeting standards for safe and high-quality care.
- Respectful Workplace – Promotes a collaborative and respectful workplace environment.
3) Health Human Resources
Takes an active role in efforts to recruit, retain, develop all medical staff active in the provision of surgical services:
- Health Human Resources Planning: In collaboration with the WRHA and PMSL, The GGH Site Medical Specialty Lead for Surgery participates in the development of overarching provincial strategies of recruitment, retention and distribution of surgeons
- Privileging: Vets appointments/re-appointments and privileges in Surgery as part of site’s processes
- Coverage: Plans for appropriate physician coverage in the Surgery including development of contingency plans for physician shortage.
- Orientation: In collaboration with the CMO, provides all new physicians, including locums, orientation as to Surgery medical staff responsibilities, practice procedures and physical facilities prior to assuming duties.
- Performance: At the request of the WRHA Lead/PMSL, Surgery conducts performance evaluations for Site/Area members of the medical staff on a frequency determined by the U of M and Shared Health.
5) Stakeholder Engagement
Keeps the members Surgery informed as to policies, program objectives, and other relevant matters.
Ensures appropriate physician engagement and facilitates the removal of barriers to support practice improvement.
Engages other stakeholders within the site as well as relevant community-based services to ensure effective delivery of clinical services.
