Job Description

Richmond Hospital is a fully accredited, 228 acute care bed facility serving a local population of 200,000 with an additional catchment area of almost 120,000. Richmond Hospital is focused on meeting the needs of the people it serves and is seeking a Psychiatrist to provide services to an adult population in a team-based model.

The city of Richmond is a unique island city located on the Pacific Coast of British Columbia, in close proximity to downtown Vancouver, Vancouver International Airport and the U.S. border. Nestled in the estuary at the mouth of the historic Fraser River, the city of Richmond offers a unique blend of urban sophistication and rural tranquility, proximity to all kinds of transportation options, sunny weather and endless riverside walking paths that make Richmond a marvelous place to live work and play.

Richmond is the fourth most populous and fast growing municipalities in Metro Vancouver. To meet the growing demand for healthcare services, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is ensuring we plan for the future. Richmond Hospital is undergoing plans for a campus wide expansion and renewal. As announced on July 2020 by the Premier and Minster of Health, the aims is to build a new acute care tower. Incorporating modernized healthcare design principles, the new facility provide increased inpatient care beds, perioperative services, medical imaging and emergency services to support quality patient care and staff wellness and safety. Detailed planning is currently underway with a project completion target of 2028.

In accordance with the standards of practice and the established vision and values of Vancouver Coastal Health, the psychiatrist who accepts this position will provide an innovative and comprehensive array of psychiatric assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services to support the recovery of individuals living with complex, co-morbid mental health, addiction and physical health issues.

Richmond Adult Mental Health Team (0.5 FTE position), based in the community, is a program that provides longer-term management of serious and persistent mental health conditions requiring an interdisciplinary treatment team. The majority of referrals are from Family Physicians in the community, the Emergency Department, as well as the In-Patient Unit.

All physicians working in the Richmond Department of Psychiatry are required to participate in the on-call roster and should be eligible for clinical academic position with UBC Department of Psychiatry. The psychiatrists may also be involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of new programs and will participate in the training and education of medical students, residents and other allied health professionals. Opportunities may exist for research projects and group work.

Diversity, equity and inclusion are essential to delivering exceptional care and building a great place to work. At VCH, we value and accommodate unique differences to ensure that our staff and medical staff – both current and prospective – have the opportunity and are supported to thrive.

To build a strong and representative workforce, we are seeking candidates who will contribute to a caring and inclusive culture. We encourage applications from members of communities that are disadvantaged on any grounds under the B.C. Human Rights Code, including Indigenous Peoples, people of colour, people of all genders and sexualities and people with disabilities.
