Position Profile:
The Department of Surgery, London Health Sciences Centre, and Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University is seeking a Chair for the Wolfe Chair in Orthopaedic Research and Innovation. The Chair will advance excellence in orthopaedic research and innovation through translational and clinically
grounded research intertwined with brilliance in science. The holder of this position will specialize in orthopaedic research and innovation with a preference being given to an MD specializing in hip and knee arthroplasty. The Chair will have demonstrated potential to attract peer-reviewed research funding at the level needed to sustain a nationally and internationally leading research program.
Academic and Clinical Expectations: The successful candidate will ideally be an orthopaedic surgeon and have a specialization in hip and knee arthroplasty, the ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of members of the research and health care team and office staff and will be expected to lead in multi-disciplinary team-based research with a focus on innovation in arthroplasty. The successful candidate will be expected to secure and hold external research funding, to contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to supervise graduate trainees. Advanced training and experience in research is preferred. Clinical duties and expectations will be determined by the Department of Surgery.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have an MD or equivalent degree and and must be eligible for licensing in the Province of Ontario. The successful candidate will hold a full-time limited term Clinical Academic appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, or a Continuing Clinical Academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, depending upon qualifications and experience at the time of appointment.
Compensation Details: The Chair appointment is for a five-year period, with the possibility of renewal for one additional term pending review recommendation. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be composed primarily of fee for service clinical earnings, an alternate funding plan and academic salary.
The Department: The Department of Surgery has over 100 surgeons and scientists, one basic science graduate degree program, and seven Royal College academic training programs; enrolling over 160 trainees at various levels. The Department is comprised of eight Divisions: Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Urology. Notwithstanding Paediatric Surgery, each Division has an active post-graduate residency training program. In addition, there are four sub-units tied to one or more Divisions: The Hand and Upper Limb Centre (HULC) based at St. Joseph’s Health Care, London; the Multi-Organ Transplant Program based at University Hospital; the Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic based on Western’s campus; and the Trauma Program based at Victoria Hospital.
The City: London, Ontario is Canada’s 10th largest city with a population over 400,000, a catchment area of 2.4 million, and is situated in southwestern Ontario between Toronto and Detroit. The region has a strong economy and excellent primary and secondary school systems for residents with children. It is a safe and culturally diverse city.
