Job Description
Description
The Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) and The Ottawa Hospital is looking for a full-time academic cardiologist with a focus on Critical Care Cardiology Research.
The successful candidate will work at UOHI, which is a large tertiary centre providing cardiovascular care to Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) is Canada’s largest and foremost heart health centre. It employs over 1,400 physicians, nurses, researchers, technicians, allied health professionals and more. The Institute handles more than 235,000 patient visits yearly from across Canada.
In addition to state-of-the-art catheterization (4) and electrophysiology (4) labs, a dedicated cardiac imaging facility with PET, MRI, CT, SPECT and echocardiography imaging, core facilities include 96 inpatient ward beds, an intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) with 14 beds, an intensive cardiac surgery unit (CSICU) with 27 beds, a Day Unit with 36 beds, a Step-Down Unit with 17 beds, within which is nested a Structural Procedure Unit of 6 beds.
The Division is renowned for delivery of outstanding cardiac care, excellence in education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels (recognized as a leading training program in Canada and internationally). The UOHI is internationally recognized for its research in critical care cardiology, specifically cardiogenic shock and STEMI/ACS, as well as valvular heart disease, electrophysiology, cardiac transplantation, and pulmonary hypertension. Furthermore, it boasts a rapidly expanding program in structural interventions.
The Ottawa Heart Institute Research Corporation (OHIRC) is UOHI’s research arm. It can be thought of as a shared services corporation wherein scientists/investigators conduct research through grant funding, contracts, etc., and are supported by core services of the Institute. These supports include but are not limited to: posting and communicating useful information about research, support during the pre and post award processes, management of the internal grant review program, manuscript due diligence process, other reviews and funding competitions, and PIs support programs such as mentorship.
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually. Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank 5th in Canada for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Over 2,300 researchers are publishing more than 2,200 studies yearly, with hundreds being high-impact publications (top 10% or citations).
The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 25 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.
The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada’s top-tier medical faculties. As the most research-intensive Faculty at the University of Ottawa, the Faculty of Medicine contributes significantly to the University being ranked 5th in the country for total research revenues (Research InfoSource), routinely 2nd or 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science grants (McLean’s), 4th in Canada for citations (2022 THE rankings) and 1st for overall growth in Tri-council funding over the past two decades. The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English/French) university in the world and the Faculty of Medicine first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada. The Faculty of Medicine has a long history of conducting the highest quality basic and clinical research, in close partnership with five affiliated academic hospitals and six research institutes. The Web of Science recently published a list of the most highly cited researchers in the world, where seven out of eight researchers identified from the uOttawa are from the Faculty of Medicine. Together, these remarkable achievements are a strong testament to the competitiveness and excellence of our Faculty that extend to all our educational programs.
The City of Ottawa provides a thriving multicultural and bilingual environment. Ottawa boasts numerous cultural activities as well as readily accessible sporting and natural resources, making it an ideal family and healthy living environment.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will join a team of 50 cardiologists at UOHI. The Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU) at UOHI is a high-volume, high-acuity 14 bed unit that provides care to critically ill cardiac patients, including invasive mechanical ventilation, CRRT and percutaneous mechanical circulatory support devices. A wide breadth of cardiac pathology is seen in the unit, including patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock, decompensated valvular heart disease, and electrical storm.
The successful candidate will predominantly work in the ICCU and will regularly participate in the ICCU on-call rotation. The individual will also provide care in our Step-Down Unit (Regional Reference Center), geographically located just outside the level 3 unit, comprising 17 beds.
Additional clinical work includes, but is not limited to, the Rapid Assessment of Critical Events (RACE) team. Additional clinical responsibilities will depend on the successful applicant’s subspecialty training and academic track.
The candidate will participate in academic activities, including teaching of medical residents (both informally at the bedside and with formalized teaching sessions, including morning report and academic half-day).
Finally, the ICCU supports a highly successful, internationally recognized research program. The ICCU research team is leading multiple investigator-initiated clinical trials focused on the care of critically ill cardiac patients. Participation in current clinical research is encouraged and support for new projects will be provided by the Division and the ICCU team.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a very strong clinical research track record. The practice profile will be negotiated based on expected academic and clinical deliverables. Evidence of significant academic productivity is an advantage. The candidate must also have completed training in Critical Care Medicine at a recognized training center. Preference will be given to candidates with formal board certification in a 2-year Critical Care Medicine fellowship program and those with formalized graduate training in research.
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for FRCPC certification in Internal Medicine, with a subspeciality certification in Cardiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor; however, preference will be given to eligible for the rank of Associate Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank is commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.
Job Benefits
The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends. Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time physicians.
Additional Information
The Department of Medicine is committed to upholding the values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in our living, learning, and work environments. We encourage qualified applicants from all groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity to apply. Upon request, accommodations due to a disability are available throughout the recruitment process.
Please note Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. We sincerely thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
