Job Description

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Queen's University invites applications for academic emergency medicine positions. In addition to a major focus on providing exemplary clinical care, successful applicants will participate in the supervision and teaching of medical students and residents, engage in academic activities in the Department of Emergency Medicine and will contribute to the administrative functions of the Department, University and Hospitals. It is expected that candidates will exhibit potential for innovative and scholarly academic contributions as clinicians, educators, researchers or administrators. Applicants must demonstrate strong leadership skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment. Applicants with formal training and experience, and strong potential to establish a scholarly profile in point-of-care ultrasound, geriatric emergency medicine, quality improvement, clinical or health services research, or medical education scholarship will be prioritized.

Applicants must have certification in Emergency Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or the College of Family Physicians Canada (CFPC) or equivalent, and be eligible for or have licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.  Academic rank and protected academic time will be commensurate to the candidate’s experience and history of scholarly contributions.

The Department operates clinically at Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s two sites, with an annual combined ED volume approaching 120,000 patient visits. The department provides tertiary emergency care services for the Southeastern Ontario referral region, and serves as the only Level 1 trauma centre in Southeastern Ontario.  The department supports outstanding RCPSC and CFPC accredited Emergency Medicine training programs as well as fellowship programs in Point of Care Ultrasound, Resuscitation and Reanimation, and Global Emergency Medicine.  Support for research and scholarship is a priority, and the Department has a strong national academic profile with diverse areas of research focus including injury/trauma, thrombosis and bleeding, cardiac arrest and resuscitation, global health and humanitarian healthcare, vector-borne disease and COVID-19 epidemiology. In addition, the department has a large education research group with expertise in simulation, competency-based medical education, and assessment.  Faculty enjoy extensive departmentally-funded administrative, statistical and methodologic support.  Members of the department are remunerated through a comprehensive clinical & academic alternative funding plan, with a competitive compensation package and a generous benefits plan.

Queen’s University is recognized nationally for the quality of its undergraduate and graduate programs, which attract outstanding students.  Queen’s University is an integral part of the vibrant Kingston community at the heart of the Thousand Islands region of southeastern Ontario.  It has a community spirit and amenities unmatched by any other Canadian university.  The University and the region offer an outstanding academic and community environment.

Prior to May 1, 2022, the University required all students, faculty, staff, and visitors (including contractors) to declare their COVID-19 vaccination status and provide proof that they were fully vaccinated or had an approved accommodation to engage in in-person University activities. These requirements were suspended May 1, 2022. However, they remain in effect for students, staff, and faculty in workplaces, including hospitals, where patient care is provided and/or where the work duties or educational requirements of the position involve or support patient care.

The University invites applications from all qualified individuals.  Queen's is strongly committed to employment equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and encourages applications from Black, racialized/visible minority and Indigenous/Aboriginal people, women, persons with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQA+ persons.  All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, in accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority. To comply with Federal Laws, the University is obliged to gather statistical information about how many applicants from each job vacancy are Canadian citizens/permanent residents of Canada, applicants need not identify their country of origin or citizenship, however, all applicants must include one of the following statements: “I am a Canadian citizen/permanent resident of Canada” OR, “I am not a Canadian citizen/permanent resident of Canada”. Applications that do not include this information will be deemed incomplete.

The review of applications is on-going and will continue until the position is filled. Applications are to include a letter summarizing expertise, qualifications, and accomplishments relevant to the position, together with a CV, a brief biography, and the names and full contact information of three referees. Complete applications are to be directed to:

Queen’s University is situated on traditional Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee Territory. To acknowledge this traditional territory is to recognize its longer history, one predating the establishment of the earliest European colonies. It is also to acknowledge this territory’s significance for the Indigenous peoples who lived, and continue to live, upon it – people whose practices and spiritualities were tied to the land and continue to develop in relationship to the territory and its other inhabitants today. The Kingston Indigenous community continues to reflect the area’s Anishinaabek and Haudenosaunee roots. There is also a significant Métis community and there are First Peoples from other Nations across Turtle Island present here today.
