Description
The Department of Medicine and the Division of Medical Oncology at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital is looking for academic Medical Oncologist to join a group of 28 academic physicians. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2026 but is flexible.
The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre is the primary provider of medical oncology services to a mixed urban and rural population of 1,500,000 in Eastern Ontario, has approximately 4,000 new solid tumor medical oncology consults annually, offers a full spectrum of oncology services, and is a Canadian leader in oncology training and clinical research. Cancer is a priority focus for The Ottawa Hospital (one of Canada’s largest teaching hospitals) and for the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. The vision of The Ottawa Hospital is “to provide each patient with the world-class care, exceptional service and compassion that we would want for our loved ones.”
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually.
Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank 5th in Canada for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Over 2,300 researchers are publishing more than 2,200 studies yearly, with hundreds being high-impact publications (top 10% or citations).
Bruyère Health Research Institute (BHRI) is the research arm of Bruyère Health, an academic health sciences centre that includes specialized hospitals and long-term care programs. Fully affiliated with the University of Ottawa, BHRI also collaborates with regional academic partners, government, NGO’s, and industry leaders on research and innovation initiatives. The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 25 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will will function as an academic physician. This position will consist of a 0.8 full-time practice treating gastrointestinal malignancies as a major site and minor site to be determined.
The Ottawa Hospital is a teaching hospital, and all attending staff are expected to teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees. The University of Ottawa’s Division of Medical Oncology has an academic mandate, and members are expected to contribute to fulfilling this mandate through a combination of education, research, and quality improvement.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold a MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for certification in Medical Oncology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario; and, be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine at the rank of Lecturer or higher. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Applicants must demonstrate specialized training and/or significant experience in managing gastrointestinal malignancies. This includes esophageal, gastric, colon, rectal, anal and hepatobiliary cancers.
The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.
Job Benefits
The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), an AFP, as well as honorariums/stipends. Physicians have the option to join the health and dental benefit plan at the group rate through the Ontario Medical Oncology Association.
