Job Description
Assistant / Associate Professor - Academic Infection Prevention and Control Physician
Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine
University Health Network and Sinai Health
University of Toronto
University Health Network (UHN) and Sinai Health (SH), in conjunction with the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, is seeking an Academic Infectious Diseases (ID) Physician with interest in Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) to provide leadership in preventing and controlling healthcare-associated infections at UHN (IPAC Physician). The successful applicant must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment as a Clinician in Quality and Innovation or Clinician Teacher at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor within the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. The start date is September 1, 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
A physician with excellent critical thinking and communications skills is being sought to support the UHN IPAC Department, while advancing knowledge acquisition and clinical care in ID in the University of Toronto and UHN/SH Divisions of Infectious Diseases. The IPAC Physician will provide clinical expertise on communicable diseases prevention and management, outbreak response, IPAC program elements (including surveillance programs, education) and will lead quality initiatives focused on the prevention of healthcare associated infections in acute and post-acute settings. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience and/or specialized training in IPAC. A specific interest and experience in implementing IPAC in post-acute settings is an asset.
The IPAC Physician will work closely with the UHN Medical Director of IPAC and other members of the IPAC Department, UHN leadership and clinical teams. In addition to this, the IPAC Physician will participate in teaching, research and quality improvement projects as appropriate and will provide inpatient General ID consultation at the UHN and SH. The IPAC Physician will play an active role in the expansion of UHN Outpatient ID services, including attending on 1-2 General ID clinics per week. The IPAC Physician will dually report to the UHN Medical Director of IPAC and the Division Head of ID at UHN/SH for their IPAC and clinical roles respectively. The successful candidate will be based at University Health Network – Toronto General Hospital (585 University Avenue, Toronto ON) and will cover ID at the Toronto General Hospital (200 Elizabeth Street, Toronto ON) Toronto Western Hospital (399 Bathurst Street, Toronto ON) and Mount Sinai Hospital (600 University Avenue, Toronto ON). The candidate will have office space located at Toronto General Hospital IPAC Department or ID Division Administrative space (8PMB Room 100, or 13 Eaton North, 585 University Avenue, Toronto ON).
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree, be eligible for certification in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in ID and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. An advanced training (Masters degree or equivalent) in clinical epidemiology and health research, public health, quality improvement, teaching, education or a related discipline is required. Previous experience or advanced training in IPAC or hospital epidemiology is a strong asset. Scholarly work and peer-reviewed publications would be valuable. The candidate must be able to communicate proficiently in English.
For the successful candidate, compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and will be competitive with the usual income range for an academic ID clinician in the province of Ontario, with a compensation no less than $300,000 per year, which is partially determined by fee for service. The IPAC Physician will participate in the UHN-SH Department of Medicine Practice Plan. A health benefits package is available through the Practice Plan.
Applications will be accepted until April 3, 2026 or until the position is filled.
