Job Description

Position Profile:

McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton are seeking a full-time academic Plastic Surgeon with fellowship training. The candidate will be involved in complex reconstruction including microsurgery to support oncologic reconstruction including Head and Neck, Breast and other oncologic services. Special interest in other subspecialty disciplines within plastic surgery would be an asset including lymphedema care as we develop this clinical program. The HNHB LHIN (4) Plastic Surgery Program serves a catchment area of more than 3 million residents. The service provides tertiary and quaternary level care to patients within the catchment area and plays an essential role in the support of other programs including surgical oncology, trauma, general surgery, and rehabilitation services. The Plastic Surgery Division within the Department of Surgery, McMaster University is a fully accredited Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada training program in Plastic Surgery with full involvement in undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical education programs.

 


Academic and Clinical Expectations:

The successful applicant will be part of a team of five full-time surgeons (with plans to expand to 6 within the year) who provide general and specialized plastic surgery care to the community and region. The candidate will have access to surgical time in the main operating room as well as the minor procedure room. On-call will be one in five (and then six) for the hospital and there will be access to an outpatient clinic each week. The candidate must possess exemplary clinical skills in all facets of plastic surgery as well as professionalism, with evidence of excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills. The candidate will be required to support the Division of Plastic Surgery with teaching commitments and will be involved in teaching of medical students, residents and fellows. In addition, the applicant must have a stated research interest and plan for research development and/or plans for leadership in medical education/quality improvement. The successful applicant will be expected to show evidence of interpersonal and collaborative skills and initiative to further advance the clinical and academic productivity of the Plastic Surgery Division. A commitment to surgical education at all levels is essential, as well, interest in formal educational roles would be advantageous. A full-time appointment at the appropriate level in the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University is required and will be available to the successful applicant. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Qualifications:

The successful applicant must hold (or be eligible for) Certification in Plastic Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as well as licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Candidates must have Canadian Medical Protective Association or equivalent in good standing. Compensation will be by OHIP billings, on-call stipend, and AFP funding for education and research activity. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be considered first for this position.
