Job Description

EXCELLENT CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Humber River Health ("HRH") is a multi-site organization serving a population of more than 850,000 people in the northwest Greater Toronto Area. The organization operates Hennick Humber Hospital, a 1.8 million square foot, fully digital acute care facility, with 722 acute inpatient beds and support from more than 4,000 staff, approximately 800 physicians, and over 1,000 volunteers. HRH also operates Reactivation Care Centres at the Finch and Church Campuses through a unique multi-hospital partnership focused on specialized care for patients designated as Alternative Level of Care.

Equity and inclusivity are central to HRH’s mission and are shared priorities with the North Western Toronto Ontario Health Team (“NWT OHT”). HRH’s 2023–26 Strategic Plan focuses on strengthening its role as a community academic healthcare institution, with key objectives that include:

·        evolving workflows and scopes of practice;

·        advancing the use of technology to enhance care and outcomes;

·        expanding partnerships to advance the delivery of equitable and inclusive care; and

·        strengthening medical education programs.

As an associate member of the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network (“TAHSN”), HRH offers academic opportunities across professions. In partnership with the University of Toronto, HRH established Schulich Family Medicine Teaching Unit, providing residents with opportunities to train with academic and community-based family physicians and interdisciplinary teams.

As Canada’s first fully digital hospital and home to the country’s first digital Command Centre, HRH is committed to innovation, research, and academic excellence. The HRH Research Institute supports digital healthcare innovation, while the Command Centre functions as a central hub for managing patient flow and enhancing care quality. HRH leverages closed-loop automation, robotics, predictive analytics, and artificial intelligence to improve patient safety, outcomes, and system efficiency using real-time hospital data.

At the heart of this digital transformation are the people who make it possible. HRH’s culture has been shaped by the dedication and support of its staff, physicians, and volunteers, who share a common belief: that together, we can transform the hospital where we work, the community where we live, and the broader healthcare landscape. With exceptional teams driving innovation, strong resolve, and a commitment to excellence, Humber River Health continues to deliver Tomorrow’s Healthcare, Today.

We are looking for a:

ANATOMIC PATHOLOGIST (hematopathology training is an asset)

Department and Program Overview

The HRH Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a well-established, high-volume program supported by a team of ten full-time pathologists. The HRH Laboratory is fully accredited under ISO 15189 Plus by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics and manages a robust annual workload, including approximately 30,000 surgical pathology cases, 4,300 cytology specimens, 150 bone marrow examinations, and 950 flow cytometry samples. In total, the laboratory performs over 8 million tests annually, delivering comprehensive diagnostic services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The laboratory is staffed by a highly skilled and collaborative professional team that includes anatomical pathologists, some with hematopathology expertise, a microbiologist and a biochemist, supported by experienced technical and operational staff. Together, the team is committed to delivering timely, accurate, and high-quality diagnostic services.

The Laboratory Medicine Program is multidisciplinary in nature and brings together experienced professionals dedicated to providing patient-centered, high-quality care in support of clinical decision-making across the organization. The program offers a broad range of advanced diagnostic services, including Anatomical Pathology, Cytology, Microbiology, Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Transfusion Medicine, Point-of-Care Testing, and Specimen Procurement.

Position Summary

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is seeking a full time Anatomic Pathologist. The successful candidate will provide general pathology services including regular surgical and cytopathology service work, frozen section coverage, tumour board, occasional autopsy, and on-call coverage. HRH has an expectation that all physicians will apply for an academic appointment in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Your support for medical learners is key to our strategic plan as an academic centre and our participation as a member of TAHSN.

In addition to demonstrated clinical excellence and outstanding interpersonal skills, the successful candidate must be a Royal College Fellow with specialty certification in Pathology and a member of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario.
