Description
The Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) and The Ottawa Hospital are seeking a full-time academic cardiologist to serve as Chair in Regional and Remote Cardiology. This position is targeted to a mid-career clinician investigator with a practice profile of approximately 70% clinical care and 30% research.
The successful candidate will play a leadership role in advancing regional and remote cardiovascular care, with a particular focus on strengthening partnerships and developing sustainable clinical and academic programs with regional hospitals across Eastern Ontario and on providing and coordinating specialized cardiology services for patients in Nunavut. The Chair will assume the role of Qikiqtaaluk Cardiology Program Lead, a long-standing program delivering cardiology care to residents of the Qikiqtaaluk (Baffin) Region.
In this role, the successful candidate will work collaboratively with regional partners, Indigenous organizations, and community stakeholders, with an emphasis on culturally respectful care, relationship-building, and the co-development of care models that respond to the needs of northern and remote populations.
The successful candidate will be based at UOHI, Canada’s largest and foremost heart health centre, which provides tertiary and quaternary cardiovascular care to patients from 16 hospitals in Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, Nunavut and across Canada. UOHI employs more than 1,600 healthcare professionals and supports more than 245,000 patient encounters annually. The Division of Cardiology is internationally recognized for excellence in clinical care, education, and research.
In addition to state-of-the-art catheterization (4) and electrophysiology (4) labs, a dedicated cardiac imaging facility with PET, MRI, CT, SPECT and echocardiography imaging, core facilities include 96 inpatient ward beds, an intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) with 14 beds, an intensive cardiac surgery unit (CSICU) with 27 beds, a Day Unit with 36 beds, a Step-Down Unit with 17 beds, within which is nested a Structural Procedure Unit of 6 beds.
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually. Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank 5th in Canada for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Over 2,300 researchers are publishing more than 2,200 studies yearly, with hundreds being high-impact publications (top 10% or citations).
The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 25 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.
The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada’s top-tier medical faculties. As the most research-intensive Faculty at the University of Ottawa, the Faculty of Medicine contributes significantly to the University being ranked 5th in the country for total research revenues (Research InfoSource), routinely 2nd or 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science grants (McLean’s), 4th in Canada for citations (2022 THE rankings) and 1st for overall growth in Tri-council funding over the past two decades. The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English/French) university in the world and the Faculty of Medicine first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada. The Faculty of Medicine has a long history of conducting the highest quality basic and clinical research, in close partnership with five affiliated academic hospitals and six research institutes. The Web of Science recently published a list of the most highly cited researchers in the world, where seven out of eight researchers identified from the uOttawa are from the Faculty of Medicine.
Together, these remarkable achievements are a strong testament to the competitiveness and excellence of our Faculty that extend to all our educational programs.
The City of Ottawa provides a thriving multicultural and bilingual environment. Ottawa boasts numerous cultural activities as well as readily accessible sporting and natural resources, making it an ideal family and healthy living environment.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will join a Division of approximately 50 cardiologists at UOHI. Clinical responsibilities will primarily focus on the delivery of comprehensive cardiology care, with an emphasis on regional outreach and remote practice. This includes providing clinical cardiology services at UOHI consistent with the candidate’s subspecialty training and expertise. The role also involves leading and further developing cardiology programs in partnership with regional hospitals, including the establishment of shared-care models, outreach clinics, virtual care initiatives, and educational collaborations.
The successful candidate will serve as the Qikiqtaaluk Cardiology Program Lead, overseeing and delivering cardiology care to patients in Nunavut through a combination of in-territory clinics, telemedicine, and coordinated referral pathways to UOHI. They will work collaboratively with Indigenous partners, regional health authorities, and multidisciplinary teams to support equitable access to cardiovascular care and to foster respectful, sustainable clinical partnerships. In addition, the candidate will collaborate with hospital partners and health system stakeholders to enhance access, quality, and continuity of cardiovascular care for regional and remote populations.
The major aims and objectives of this position and program include establishing improved outpatient care for individuals across the region and developing a Regional Referral Centre. The role will support excellence in cardiac imaging, deliver virtual and remote care, and bring prevention initiatives to regional and remote areas through the 1 Million Canadian Hearts and Mobile Value Clinic initiatives. Additional objectives include expanding cardiac rehabilitation into regional communities, hiring an academic leader in virtual and remote care research, broadening the reach of the Acute Cardiac Triage Unit at UOHI, and diversifying cardiac care delivery in Nunavut.
The successful candidate will maintain an active academic portfolio. This includes developing and leading a research program aligned with regional and remote cardiology, health systems innovation, Indigenous health, health equity, implementation science, or related areas. The candidate will participate in teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels through bedside teaching, formal academic sessions, and mentorship of trainees and junior faculty. They will also contribute to the academic mission of the Division and Department through scholarly activity, leadership, and service.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate must hold FRCPC certification in Internal Medicine, with subspecialty certification in Cardiology.
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario; be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of academic productivity and clinical research appropriate for a mid-career clinician investigator. They will bring experience or a strong interest in regional, rural, or remote cardiovascular care, including the delivery of virtual care models.
The candidate will demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively across cultures, institutions, and jurisdictions, supported by proven leadership skills and the capacity to build and sustain collaborative programs. Experience teaching medical students, residents, and/or fellows is also required.
The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.
