Job Description

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for a clinical Hepatologist to be based at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.. 

 

Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.  The University is currently home to 39,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff. 

 

The Division of Gastroenterology currently has 16 MD members at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.  The Division of Gastroenterology, University of Alberta, is one of the largest gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy, motility, and nutrition centers in Canada. US News & World Report in their 2022 Best Universities Report ranked Gastroenterology and Hepatology No. 2 in Canada and No. 28 in the world. It manages leading-edge clinical, basic and translational research programs involving 45 graduate and undergraduate students; over 3 million dollars in basic and clinical research funding annually and has developed the Centres of Excellence for Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research (CEGIIR) and Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease Research (GILDR). The Royal Alexandra Hospital has 870 beds with General Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obs/Gyne, ICU, CCU, and ER services. The Division of Gastroenterology at the Royal Alexandra Hospital has 2 specialized consultation services with an Endoscopy suite conducting >20 000  endoscopies annually. 

 

The successful candidate will have approximately 1 full day of endoscopy per week with intermittent added days of colonoscopy screening (excluding holidays, service weeks and conference leave) .   

 

Key accountabilities of the clinical Hepatologist will include participation in all aspects of inpatient and outpatient Hepatology/gastroenterology healthcare including but not limited to, city-wide night-, weekend- and holiday- call, and administrative tasks. The successful candidate will also be expected to implement and manage patients in a hospital-based ambulatory Cirrhosis care clinic.   

 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) with Fellowship training in Hepatology from a recognized training center, and must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The qualified individual should have extensive experience in all aspects of clinical Hepatology and Liver Transplantation.  

The successful applicant will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague Appointment in the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, which will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.
