Job Description

Health PEI is seeking a third full-time Gastroenterologist for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown.

Are you looking for an incredible opportunity to work in an environment that fosters a strong culture of teamwork? How about living in a community that encourages work-life balance? If so, then look no further.

Prince Edward Island may be small, but it boasts a robust healthcare system that is streamlined under a single health authority. Here, you’ll experience great collaboration enabling you to influence care and implement improvements more readily than in larger jurisdictions. In addition, you will be known not just as a healthcare provider but as a valued community member, seeing your patients and co-workers not just in clinical settings but as neighbors and friends.

In addition to professional fulfillment, practicing in PEI means living in one of Canada’s most scenic destinations. With its safe, welcoming communities and breathtaking landscapes year-round, PEI offers both natural beauty and an exceptional quality of life. Whether you seek a small urban or rural setting, you’ll have access to outdoor activities, fresh food from our land and sea, and a vibrant arts and cultural scene. Prince Edward Island is the ideal place for physicians who value both professional satisfaction and personal well-being.

Start Date: Immediately

Job Duties:

  • The Physician will provide an office- and hospital-based practice, delivering Gastroenterology outpatient consultative services to residents and visitors of Prince Edward Island, in addition to appropriate inpatient follow-up. The Physician will be responsible for follow-up patient care, including timely communication of all pertinent test results, referrals, and consultations to patients.
  • The Physician will act as a consultant in Gastroenterology to other physicians and primary care providers in Prince Edward Island. The Physician will work collaboratively with other health care workers such as Nurse Practitioners, Physiotherapists, Pharmacists, etc. to plan and deliver competent health services.
  • The Physician will adhere to general charting guidelines, in accordance with Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), the Medical Staff Bylaws and the Health PEI Chart Documentation Standard, for the accurate and timely completion of medical records for all patients under their care.
  • The Physician is required to participate equitably in an on-call schedule.

Hours of work:

  • Full-time hours for a salaried physician is defined as 37.5 hours per week; 1950 hours per year;
  • Full-time contract-for-service hours is based on a maximum of 1,725 hours per year;
  • On-call coverage as required.

Remuneration:

Health PEI offers payment modality options including:

  • Fee-for-Service – Under this model, physicians are compensated for each service provided, in accordance with the Tariff of Fees outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. This model offers maximum flexibility in terms of scheduling, service volume, and practice style. Physicians typically operate through a professional corporation, which may offer tax advantages. Most physicians are responsible for overhead costs, which average around 25% of total billings. While this model does not include paid employee benefits, physicians have access to negotiated benefits through the Physician Services Agreement
  • Salary – Physicians employed under the salaried model enter into an employee-employer relationship with Health PEI. This model includes a defined schedule, assigned duties, and a comprehensive suite of employment benefits such as:
    • Health and dental coverage
    • Paid vacation and sick leave
    • Life insurance
    • RRSP matching

Compensation: $193.44 per hour (equivalent to $377,208.00 annually for a 1.0 FTE)

  • Contract-for-Service – Physicians working under a Contract for Service are compensated hourly, as outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. While this model does not include traditional employment benefits (e.g., paid vacation, health and dental, RRSP matching), it does provide access to negotiated benefits such as parental leave. The hourly rate includes an additional amount in lieu of benefits. This model may offer tax advantages for physicians who choose to incorporate.

Compensation: $232.00 per hour (equivalent to $400,200.00 annually for a 1.0 FTE)

Incentives:

  • Qualified and licensable candidates may be eligible for a return in service grant of up to $100,000 with a 3 year commitment to Health PEI pro-rated to the FTE;
  • Eligible moving expense reimbursement of up to $10,000 is available;
  • Opportunity to teach Medical Learners and Residents with faculty appointment at affiliated universities;
  • Access to hospital-based electronic patient record system with lab and x-ray reports from office; and
  • Other incentives as per the Physician Services Agreement.
