Job Description

The Division of Hematology at Queen’s University is growing. We seek a General Hematologist to expand our program, contributing to clinical care, research, and education and with opportunities for leadership. This is full time academic position with competitive remuneration through the Southeastern Ontario Academic Medical Organization.

The Division of Hematology is housed within the Department of Medicine. The Division is comprised of eleven faculty members, supported by a strong allied health professional team, and benefits from excellent collaborative working relationships with the Departments of Oncology, Pathology and Molecular Medicine, and Pediatrics. The group provides clinical care to a large catchment area of 500,000 people. Out-patient specialty clinics at Kingston Health Sciences Centre include bleeding disorders, thrombosis, and sickle cell disease and hemoglobinopathies. Regional care is provided in collaboration with excellent colleagues at community hospitals. There are thriving research programs in hemostasis, thrombosis, transfusion medicine, and clinical trials, alongside a highly successful Hematology residency training program.

Applicants with a clinical focus in any part of benign or general hematology are warmly invited to apply. The role includes diagnostic work up of undifferentiated patients, along with limited care of patients with hematological malignancies on inpatient consult service and on call. Training opportunities are available for early career hematologists or those considering expanding their scope of practice in these areas. The successful candidate will be supported and mentored in pursuing clinical research or quality improvement aligned with their interests.

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to provide exemplary clinical service. In addition, the successful applicant would be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, engage in independent or collaborative research, and contribute to the administrative functions of the University and Hospitals. It is expected that candidates will exhibit a strong potential for innovative and scholarly research, as well as provide evidence of a robust academic portfolio with demonstrable teaching experience. Candidates must also demonstrate strong leadership skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a collaborative environment.

Qualified applicants will hold an MD degree (or equivalent). Applicants must be eligible for licensure in Hematology by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Preference will be given to those who either hold or are eligible for certification in Hematology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Academic rank will be commensurate with experience.

Faculty and their dependents are eligible for an extensive benefits package including prescription drug coverage, vision care, dental care, long term disability insurance, life insurance and access to the Employee and Family Assistance Program. Employees also participate in a pension plan. Tuition assistance is available for qualifying employees, their spouses and dependent children. Queen’s values families and is pleased to provide a ‘top up’ to government parental leave benefits for eligible employees on maternity/parental leave. In addition, Queen’s provides partial reimbursement for eligible daycare expenses for employees with dependent children in daycare. For more information on employee benefits, see Queen’s Human Resources.

Queen’s University is recognized nationally for the quality of its undergraduate and graduate programs, which attracts outstanding students. Queen’s University is an integral part of the vibrant Kingston community in the heart of the Thousand Islands region of southeastern Ontario. It has a community spirit and amenities unmatched by any other Canadian university. The University and the region offer an outstanding academic and community environment (www.queensu.ca).

The University invites applications from all qualified individuals. Queen's is strongly committed to employment equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and encourages applications from Black, racialized/visible minority and Indigenous people, women, persons with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQA+ persons.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, in accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority, including any qualified individuals who have a valid legal work status in Canada. Applications from all qualified candidates will be considered in the applicant pool. In order to support your employment at Queen’s, we require you to indicate whether or not you will need a work permit.

Those interested in this position should submit a complete application package, including the following documents:

  • a cover letter, summarizing expertise, qualifications, and accomplishments relevant to the position. The cover letter should also indicate whether or not you will require a work permit and/or require support with an extension of your work permit in the future.
  • a Curriculum Vitae; and,
  • the names and full contact information of three referees.

Complete applications are to be directed to:
