Job Description

Saanich Peninsula Hospital (SPH) is currently seeking Emergency Medicine Physicians to provide locum coverage in a supportive community hospital setting.

SPH is a 65-bed acute care hospital with an 18-bed Emergency Department that sees approximately 38,000 patients annually, including both pediatric and adult populations. As the primary referral hospital for the Southern Gulf Islands, SPH serves a total population of approximately 87,000.

The Emergency Department is staffed by a collegial and progressive group of 16 full- and part-time emergency physicians, with six shifts per day and 15 hours of double coverage. Daytime in-hospital support includes Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Palliative Care, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, and Respiratory Therapy, along with access to numerous community-based specialists. SPH is also the first Emergency Department in British Columbia to pilot the use of Physician Assistants.

Tertiary care support is available within 30 minutes by road at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital. Laboratory services and Medical Imaging, including a CT scanner, operate daily from 07:30 to 24:00, with on-call services overnight. Physicians must be comfortable working in a single-coverage environment without 24/7 on-site Respiratory Therapy or ICU support.

SPH is affiliated with the University of British Columbia’s Island Medical Program, offering regular teaching opportunities for medical students and residents within the Emergency Department.

Applicants must hold CCFP-EM or FRCPC Emergency Medicine certification and be eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. The department is particularly interested in physicians with community hospital Emergency Department experience, flexible availability, and a willingness to assist with high-volume or acuity “crisis call-in” coverage.

Successful candidates will enjoy flexible scheduling and an excellent lifestyle in the beautiful surroundings of Vancouver Island.
